Thanks for this, yes, I`m just a bit south of Cape Wrath and Durness.

I know Bervie and that area though not been up for several years. They grow good stones on some of those coastal crofts, size of small houses.

I do actually have some old fencing myself I might make use of..it is pretty knackered but maybe some parts of it can be useable. There`s a small stand of trees here, that was fenced off around thirty years ago to protect the saplings from deer (it isn`t deer fencing though) so I`m cutting that free as the trees are fully grown now, can re use that, thanks for the idea. :D
    (and the netting link!)
    Know the area well.

    Wooo new thread! :D
Shame about the last one, but I always like to see a shiny new one too!

Sammy kaye - tortilla wraps are on offer in the co-op at the moment - 85p for 8 big ones. Just realised you prob already know that cos you work there, but never mind, might be useful for someone else!

We had yummy beef chilli last night with some really good reduced beef mince from waitrose, not fatty at all. We had a big portion each, in wraps, then I had some for lunch (with a wrap!) and we're going to have a big portion each for tea tonight with spaghetti, yum. So that's 5 portions, possibly 6. Added chopped carrots, grated carrot, onions, a pepper, mushrooms, half a tin of tomatoes, a load of cumin, paprika etc, and a fresh chilli. Rough calc says it cost approx. 85p per portion or 70p if we get 6 portions out of it. Not my cheapest meal, but not bad considering it was delicious and felt like a treat! :)

I think I'm going to head to the coop tomorrow and buy an Elmwood chicken for £3, and have a roast on sunday. We had one last weekend too but it works out quite cheap if we aren't greedy with the chicken. After my big shop the other day I have about £30 to last the rest of the month (groceries-wise), so that should be ok - about £10 per week pretty much just on fruit, veg, milk and eggs.

Is there anything that should/can be planted in the garden at the moment? I haven't had much time to spend on gardening lately, but apart from leeks, and a sorry-looking few squashes, I haven't got anything much in over winter. I don't want to have to buy ALL my veg!

DH texted me just now asking if I fancied going out for a couple of after-work drinks. I don't know how he thinks we would pay for them - neither of us have much money to last the rest of the month, and we're not paying out of the joint account (mortgage overpayment pot!) that's for sure! I've suggested we have a cosy night in with a bottle of red wine instead - reduced from the Coop (I love that shop lately!) :D He's not bad with money, but he does always seem to want to buy/do things that aren't necessary, but cost money lately! He's well on board with reducing our joint expenditure so that we can overpay the mortgage and save up for kiddies etc, but I don't think he's adjusting his personal expenditure accordingly...I wouldn't mind, but he keeps complaining he's got no money, as if I have!

Ah well, I can't complain too much, he does have my tea on the table for me when I get home from work every day :)

Off to the gym in a bit, then home for said bottle of wine (hopefully he'll go for that option!)

    Have a nice evening all

    BB
Seed wise planting for now but get about june is the broad bean family dwarf sutton and acualia, metor peas, bulb's like garlic and japanise onion's and if you've got a sheltered spot don't read this bit Mardatha some fast growing kale and spinich beet. hth.

Thriftkitten not a silly question at all! I tend to briefly fry the mince and onions then put them in the slowcooker. I used to put to it low for about 8 hours.

Thanks primrose i'll try that with the sprouts!
That's my job for monday lindyloo:D
dolly i would wait ill after winter, that way at least you know the bills are covered. I'm £90 in credit with the electric and waiting till after winter before i reclaim it. Hope that make sense.

I shall briefly delurk on this shiny new thread

I enjoyed reading the other thread, it's a shame the it got locked. The levels of moderation on here really put me off posting, I'm sure I'm not the only one, so I mostly stick to reading, and sighing when things get closed or merged!

But, mustn't go on about it, or we'll have another closed thread on our hands!

So, how am I coping? Only just! I manage to stick to budget most of the time, but there's so much more I could do with getting, it seems never ending :( Not looking forward to the vat going up! I'm as frugal as I can be now, so I'll just have to put my budget up, which means my house fund will be even more neglected than it is at the moment :(

Can people please refrain from making comments like this :) Sorry to highlight one post in particular, but I don't have time to sit and compile a list so no offence meant PPP :)

Unless you have been a Board guide, you won't have any idea how it feels to constantly read complaints and grumbles from people, about howmyself Pink & Penny help the site out on a voluntary basis !

I have no idea what is happening to Old Style, but it seems to have taken a bit of a downturn recently. Can't we all just get along? Old Style is not the place for arguments and disagreements (not unless it's to argue about the best way to freeze milk:rotfl:)

This is supposed to be a friendly forum, where like minded thrifty people share ideas and help each other.!

People groan and grumble about threads being merged or closed? Ha!:rotfl: Try being a board guide and see how many times a day you sigh or groan.:D;)

Please can people stop making comments about the board guides and can we all just be pleasant and get along? If anyone has any queries about why the previous thread was closed - just go and read the last few pages. To me , it's perfectly obvious. :)

If anyone wants to discuss how the board is run, how threads are merged, locked, put back on topic/moved - take it to the site feedback board please. If you have a particular concern about a specific board guide, please speak to abuse. Their email is in my sig.

As i don't wish to take this thread off topic, if you need clarification on anything I've said, pm me :)

My DD aged 4 seems to be picking up OS ways that not even I do!!

Tonight she took the last muffin (that we baked on Friday) out of a plastic food bag I had stored them in, so I told her we can make more tomorrow so she said "Oh good, and then we can put them all in this bag" and put the used bag back in the cupboard!!!

Same here - it was like summer in Dorset yesterday, only a few degrees cooler today (but still very nice) and supposed to be possible highs of 21c here tomorrow....not very autumnal, but I'm not complaining :)

Really struggling with the grocery challenge this month. This is my 4th month and it all seems to have gone to pot, although the cost of food is just going up in leaps and bounds, isn't it? and here we all are trying to manage on the same budget month after month

I may have to re-arrange some of the meals on my menu planner for some cheap(er) teas for the last week of the month in order to manage.
I need to extend my cheap(er) recipe list, including desserts.

I've found some lush meals on the internet over the last few months, but several of them have ingredients that aren't always in season or on offer, which can in turn make them a bit more pricey.

Coq au vin is on my "to make" list gailey as I've never made one for some reason, so thanks for reminding me :) Gonna try and fit one into next months menu planner.

Growing peppers would be helpful to me (although it would have to be in pots) as I get through so many of them - any one got a rough idea of when they should be planted at all? or would I be better of going over to the Really Old Style Board and ask over there?

Old fashioned teas at the weekend flowertotmum - what a lovely idea - I might do that myself :)
