Not Using Direct Debit

Not sure if this goes in this section

I pay my mobile phone bill either online or by phone by debit card.
But because I don't use Direct Debit they charge me £2.98 for not doing so. They don't even send me a paper bill, because I check it online.
It annoys me each month and feel that I am being made to pay for inconveniencing them. I do not see the difference in me paying online, to paying by Direct Debit.

Its not the online payments that really cost, it's having someone available to take card payments over the phone that costs.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

  • if I pay by phone its automated , no human involved.
whether I pay by debit card over phone
    online through their website
or even if I set a standing order up
no matter which way i did it
if it was not direct debit they charged me £2.80 for not doing so.
  • It still costs them to answer your call. They have to pay for the phone line, the card processing fee, etc.

What's the issue? Just set up a Direct Debit.

Well the solution is a no brainer then

Pay by direct debt problem solved

It doesnt costs you any more you get a discount by paying DD. If you pay most of your bills that way it can save you a fair bit of money over the year £2.98 for trouble of paying that way

I wish thats all I had to worry about in life

I don`t pay by Direct Debit either. This is because I live on such a tight budget, I fear there not being quite enough in the account for the companies who take the money out this way, as some bills are not set amounts each month, and go up or down according to consumption/charges.
    That`s an issue for me.
And yup, they charge me for not using DD too.

Why should I be forced to pay by Direct Debit?

Thats what happen to me and why I do not pay by Direct Debit anymore. I like to know what is going out of my account.

So the majority of the bills I pay are by standing order.
I have 10 such bills, not one of them makes a charge for me not paying by Direct Debit. A couple of others I pay by Debit Card also do not make a charge.
The only one that does is Orange mobile phone.

Direct Debit? Direct access to your bank account. Not after a local council tried to take £1300 from my partners bank account, alleging a debt that didn't even exist.
