BBC Video/iPlayer audio track plays twice

A few weeks I started getting a weird issue with videos on the BBC website, both short clips such as on the news pages and programmes on the iPlayer. Basically, the video starts fine, but after a few seconds or minutes a second audio track starts up, out of sync with the first. Pausing the video stops the first audio track, but the second one continues. I've tried everything I can think of to solve this, including wiping my drive and reinstalling.

I've found a couple of other people with this issue, but no solution - http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbiplayer/NF13735685?thread=7650406

Bizarrely, it affects them on Windows XP and MacOS respectively, but for me the issue is only on Ubuntu (10.04 and 10.10) - I can boot into Windows 7 and play the videos fine. It also only affects iPlayer/BBC videos, YouTube and any other flash video is fine.

Bit of a long shot given I can't find a solution anywhere else, but perhaps someone here has had this problem and figured it out.
