As there's more than one type of MP3 player in our house, I bought a simple USB-plug from eBay, rather like this one:

(yes, I know that will have finished by the time you read this!)
It works fine and charges both iPod and other MP3 players without any fuss whatsoever - I bought mine to take on holiday and as it's light it plugged into a European socket and didn't fall out (I've had other adapters fall out before!)0
