Wireless Sky multiroom

Like many , I've got Sky digital in the front room conected to the TV, and my kids have TV's in their rooms.

Is there any simple way to wirelessly (prob not a real word) connect Sky boxes in their rooms, in a similar way to Multiroom.

Will this be the simplest way of allowing my lovable angels to watch different channels in their room ??

    There are two issues here.

    1. If you want to be able to view different channels at the same time from sky digital you will need extra sky boxes and a multiroom subscription

    2. You can send the one channel you are currently watching wirelessley (sp.) to other rooms using equipment like this. I have something similar (although from Aldi a while back for less dosh - but not currently available), but I use mine to watch stuff from my PVR upstairs.

    Hope this helps

Your sky box only has one tuner (unless its sky+ when its 2) and your dish only has one L&B, this only alows the decoding of one sky channel at a time.

Sending your sky TV signal wirelessly around the house is not a problem, you just need a £20 video sender. BUT - what you want is different channels in different rooms, this means extra sky boxes (as you say) AND extra viewing cards (at extra cost) AND extra feeds into the extra sky boxes (which also means a new dish, so far I've described multiroom), THEN you want the boxes in the bedrooms to be wireless, not possible as far as I'm aware. The best I can think of is having the additional multiroom box(es) installed somewhere suitable and then using video sender(s) to send the signals to the bedroom, or just give them freeview...
  • Thanks both for your advice.

mjfusent - you mention freeview. deos that mean that i can connect freeview boxes (£20 or whatever) to the feed from the sky dish ??

Depends on the age of your system. Any dish installed in the last 5 years can handle at least 4 boxes off the back...you can tell by looking at the front of the LNB and seeing how many wire holes there are. I say "at least", because I've got all 4 of mine in use (Sky plus, + 2 standard boxes) and the installer indicated that there are further gizmos to push it beyond that.

As others have said, if you don't want to pay the extra, a video sender is the way forward, but

    (a) the ones I've seen are directional so I'm not sure how you'll manage to send to multiple rooms with a particularly clear picture, and
    (b) others may have had more success, but I've got block walls in my house and sebders give pretty terrible reception. Might be worth getting one from Argos so you can try & return if need be.

...to be honest, if you were going down the route of running from your existing box I'd get a Sky magic eye gizmo, and string some coax around the outside of your house.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

I assume that you are referring to the cheap £20 - £30 Freview boxes? If so these are definitely incompatible with a Sky dish as these receive digital terrestrial TV.

  • so the cheap freeview boxes are incompatible with sky satellite
  • Freeview needs an aerial outside ( just like normal telly ) to receive a picture being transmitted from a big antenna stuck on a hill.

Sky uses a satellite dish to get pictures from a satellite in space.

    They are not interchangeable.

Sorry to jump in on this thread but it reminded me of a question I have. I have Sky in my sitting room and also TVs in the bedroom and dining room. I also have one of those Aldi video senders which works really well in my house.

I'd like to be able to send to both the dining room and bedroom and am not bothered about it being the same channel as I'll only watch one at a time.

My question is if I want to do this, do I need to buy a full new set of the sending equipment (maybe when it's next at Aldi) and have two of the 'sending end' in the sitting room and a receiver in each of the other two rooms, or, could would it work with just another receiver in one of the rooms -(assuming it is possible just to buy this bit somewhere like Maplin?).

I know I get a good signal in both rooms without much messing around with adjustments.

    Any advice very welcome.
