Moneybookers will charge a small fee of a couple of pounds and load the exchange rate by about 2%. That will probably compare quite favourably with what a high street bank would charge.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

I haven't actually used the service myself... however, if you're looking at this:
Non-business accounts will be charged a monthly service fee of 1.00 EUR (or equivalent). The fee will be waived and thus the usage of the Moneybookers service is FREE if the user has logged into the account or made a transaction in the last 18 months. Otherwise the service fee will be deducted monthly from the account balance.

So you won't be charged this fee as long as you log in to their service at least every 18 months.

Once I read about some forex company that allows to send money from UK to Czech rep for free. Unfortunately I don't remember the name. I know that their website was green/ black colored and the domain name contained letter, X J I and was not than 5 chars long.
