Account Numbers and Sortcodes

Hi

Could someone let us know what could be done by a person who gets hold of your bank account and sortcode.

We have a feeling that they could only pay into the account but need to be sure.

Thanks

If that is all they know then, as you say, they could only pay money into your account. Remember, every time you write a cheque, you are giving this information and more (branch address, signature, etc.) to someone.

If you are concerned then watch the account for any fraudulent transactions but I think it unlikely (though, not entirely impossible) to be anything to worry about particularly if you know who it is that has acquired the information and they know that you know.

Not a lot. You provide them on every cheque you issue. And they're also on quite a few Debit Cards.
