Very slow B/Band connection....suddenly!

After years of having a stable connection my router started losing the adsl connection (end of last week).

It would eventually re-connect but at lower & lower speeds until it now will only connect @ 509kbps (bits not bytes).

I got onto Pipex, now Tiscali sadly, support & they were convinced it was my router as they said there was no problem at their end & they would send me a new BB modem & I was to leave it connected for 24hrs to the BT test socket (haven't got one).

My router has always been used on a professionally (BT) fitted extension for the past 4 years with no problems but I decided not to use that just in case & plugged the modem into the main phone socket & left it.

Just checked after 24hrs connected & no change! I've even borrowed a known working router & it couldn't even find an adsl signal.

I've changed the filters, unplugged all other equipment but no change.

I appreciate it could be a wiring fault in my property but I haven't changed anything for ages & the problems started so suddenly that I'd be surprised if it were.

Pipex seem to be very reluctant to get BT on the case & keep saying there is no fault at their end!

Not easy to make a diagnosis on a message board I know but any suggestions would be appreciated :)

Expensive if BT come into your home . They finish at the master socket .
Thats where Tiscali/Talk Talk want you to plug the router into .
On a current BT master socket unscrew the front plate screws gentle pull out and you should see the test socket . A direct router connection to this will bypass all your home wiring .
If the connection returns a good signal its clear its not the BT end .

If you can get your SNR and Att figures for Pipex all the better .

Aah so thats the test socket! That's where they asked me to plug the modem into but I borrowed the router while I was waiting & plugged it in there. It couldn't find the adsl signal, just sat there for 5 mins trying....so I unplugged it as I wasn't sure it was plugged into the right place & didn't want to do any more damage!

Your router/modem hasn't been turned off/on within short intervals during the day has it?

Do you know what your IP/bRas Profile is?

It's not been switched off for months.

Your other question has gone "whoosh" :)

Just too add. Tried both routers again 5 mins ago... the borrowed 1 just sits there with no adsl, mine finds it after 20 secs or so, connects then drops it & starts again & again & again

Just tried it & got this....

    "
Performance Tester is unable to run the speed test for your telephone number:xxxxxxxxxx. Please check that it is the correct telephone number for your service. Did you follow all the instructions given on the website, before initiating the speed test. If not, then please follow all the instructions carefully and try to run the test again. If you believe it is the correct number for your service and you have followed all the instructions then please ask your Service Provider whether you can use Performance Tester to test your Broadband speed. If yes, then ask him for the Service ID of your broadband connection and try again with this Service ID along with your Telephone Number. If this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider."

    Yes, no difference.

I have just spoken to Pipex again & *cough* persuaded them to run a line test so I'll see what they come back with.

If you are with Pipex/Tiscali/Talk Talk you could be on non BT equipment known as LLU .

Exactly. I left Pipex when they were aquired by Tiscali and migrated all customers to LLU without bothering to tell anyone. The obvious drop in speed and throughput gave it away...

Anyway - the BT speed tester probably wont work on LLU so the next best thing would be something like this: http://www.speedtest.net/ and also share the connection statistics from your router here.

Also you are testing with the router into the test jack on the master socket with everything else unplugged? When you are set up like this it is always worth wandering around the house and making sure all other extensions are, in fact, dead. You'll be amazed at how BT/Sky/DIY engineers often TEE in to the main feed before the master socket to save running a few metres of cable  completely defeating the purpose of the NTE5 master test jack in the process.

    Quick update...

After they agreed to do the line test & promising to call back I left it for 24 hrs....no call & no improvement!

So I called again but went straight to customer care (or whatever it's called) & asked for my MAC code. This seemed to cause some interest & I was asked why did I want to leave... so I told them if it wasn't sorted right away I would be off to another provider.

Within 1 hour I had a call asking me to restart the modem/router & guess what..... back to normal!

Suffice to say that after this episode I'm looking for another ISP, any suggestions?
