Laptop switches off on one profile

Hiya.

I'm posting on behalf of my SIL, she has a laptop running Vista, on it she has 3 profiles, her as Admin, and one each for her children as users. Out of nowhere she hasn't been able to use her own profile. She can enter her password and login but after about 5 seconds it just switches the laptop off and reboots back to the profile login screen.

The two user profiles are perfectly fine and work perfectly. Any ideas on what this could be or how to resolve it?

I can only give basic info because she's got the laptop but should be able to get more if needed.

Thank you x

Sorry to hijack the thread but I have a similar problem that has started occurring in the last few weeks. My account will log in when I start the computer but not if my DS has been on via his account.
What happens is once I enter the password the screen seems to lose connection and goes black. There is no noise from the PC so it doesn't sound like anything is happening and CTRl- ALT- Del does not do anything either.
I have tried him both switching user and logging off with all programs closed but don't seem to be getting any where.
Any suggestions as to why this has started happening?

    Thanks AD

    Hiya,

I'm just bumping this before we try anything further with it.

The link that ITtim posted, does it not matter that the profile that is shutting down is the admin profile? There are no error messages, it just switches off. Boots up absolutely fine in safemode.

In that case boot up in safemode and log on with the admin account. Hopefully you should then be able to create a new admin account and log on in normal mode using that.
If so then you should be able to transfer anything you want from the old account and just use the new one. You should then be able to delete the old corrupt account.

if it's something affecting the admin profile, log into safe mode with networking on the admin profile, download malwarebytes, update and full scan (fix everything it finds and post the log. Then download HiJack This run it and post the log. Both can be got from filehippo.com.

The profile in question has a RAT (remote admin tool) with this the hacker is turning off your system remotely.

You mean that there is somebody permanently monitoring a system just so that they switch it off?
