Computer Power Problems

Ive got an e-Machines 420, approx 2.5 years old.
About 2 weeks ago, I started the machine up by pressing the power button. This resulted in the machine power "flickering" on and off very fast until I switched the machine off at the socket. Started up the machine again and the problem went away.
Thought nothing of it until yesterday, when I switched on the machine and nothing happened. Dead. Tried again and nothing. Made sure all the leads were connected and tried again and it started - but then cut out after a few seconds. Tried again and the same happened. Pressed and held the power button and the computer started fine. However, after 3/4 minutes of being on a very very load whoosing noise was coming from the back of the computer, kept coming on for 10 seconds or so and dying off, then coming on again after a couple of minutes. Sounds like a fan, but nothing like usual. Realy really loud.
Was concerned, so I switched the machine off totally and left it. Today, switched it on as normal and everything was fine. Didnt have time to leave it to see if the noises kicked in so just logged it back off again. The machine usually switches itself off when its logged in, but this time it didn't. The computer had logged off, but there was still power to the unit, and when I tried to switch off the unit using the button nothing happened. It wouldn't switch off - and it wouldn't thus power up. Switched it off at the socket and left it.
I hope I havent confused you too much - can anyone help at all?

Time for a new power supply probably.
You should first check that all plugs from your current supply are firmly seated.
Replacing the supply is not a big job and they can be bought from PC World and Maplin over the counter. Probably cheaper to buy online but at Maplins, for example, you'll be able to get some technical advice.
Take the PC base unit in with the lid off and ask them for their advice on replacement.
Hope this helps.0
