Job Seekers Allowance Entitlement - Working 16 Hours

Hi,

I was recently made redundant and while I am seeking full time employment I am currently on JSA.

What I would like to know is that if I was to accept a xmas part time role working under 16 hours a week @ £6 per hour for example how much would the the JSA deduct from my forthnightly allowance?

I have asked many times at the Job Centre but each time it is unclear to me. One person says a different thing to the next.

I would be grateful if someone could give me a straight answer.

Cheers

They will deduct all except the first £5.

So for example if you earned £50, they would deduct £45 from your JSA.

Any earnings above £5 a week are deducted from your benefit pound for pound....so if you worked 15 hours at £6.00 an hour you would earn £90...£85 would be deducted from your JSA. Probably leave you with nothing..

Is that daft or what, it doesnt give people much incentive to work, does it, 16 hours for a fiver,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

The above posters are slightly wrong - the amount deducted depends on whether you're part of a couple, a lone parent or disabled.

But you're not working 16 hrs for a fiver.

    Of course you are.

Say JSA is 70 and they disregard £5 of pay.

Work for £75 or stay at home for £70 jSA so youre working for just £5

  • You won't get JSA at all, if you are working 16 hours per week. You have to be working less than 16 hours per week to qualify for JSA.

If you are disabled or have children, you may be able to get working tax credit to top up your earnings.
  • Hi,

Thanks for explaining everything but can I add, what if you earn over £6? Is there a max hourly rate?

I am only receiving the standard weekly allowance £65 so even if I was to work 15 hours @ £6.00 hour thats £90 how much would they deduct from my allowance?

I'd rather get back out there than sit at home even if its for a few hours a week.

    Thanks for your help guys
  • You would not qualify for any money as would be earning more than the weekly allowance for JS

What gets me is how the Job Centre for JSA purposes class 16 hours as full time hours. I seem to recall that it used to be 24 hours.

To the OP....if you take the employment just be aware that should you do just 1 hour above the 16 hours your claim could be closed, a rapid reclaim will then be required.
