Where do you live? If in or near a city, lots of galleries and musuems have late night openings.
 Otherwise maybe something like geo-caching?0

spinning classes are aweosme for shedding fat quickly.
another good way is to calorie count everyhting you eat (within reason). for example, a standard apcket of pasta says 75 grams per person for a main meal. use 50. same with rice. less food each meal than you are having now, twinned with some exercise (this can be fun and you will look forward to it after the first few sessions) will reap real results. its a long process dependiong upon how overweight you are at the moment. alchohol is possibly the worst offender for putting on fat. beer is 200 calories per pint, and its packed full of eostogen. this means that it is instally converted to fat as there is nothing to break down, and the oestrogen will give you breast tissue. this is great in women (within reason) but very bad for guys. if you both have bellys, then working off the fat will take a long time as the majority will be around your organs inside you beofre it comes off your belly. this is vital to be kept clear of fat and you shoudl simply make a start.
as for ideas about days out and exerciseing without spending money or involving food, thee are some great suggestions on here so far. walking on the beach works wonders. as does swiming in the sea if you can. because the water is cold, you body will be working twice as hard and you will rip calories off you. jogging is great too, the first 6 or so runs will be hard, bt you will soon love it so much that it actually becomes a pleasure. if you have push bikes, then that can ba a fun day out fro all the family too. pool swimming is fun, but doesnt burn many calories compared to most exercises.
basically, if you want to loose weight you have to eat less than your body needs everyday. this gets easier after the first 5 - 7 days as your stomach shrinks and you wont be as hungry. this an be accelerated with exercise which will help even more, but is especially hard when dieting properly as you wont have the normal energy youre used to initlly. just stick with it!
if youre planning on going bowling or to the cinema, you simply must stay away from the snack areas. this is incredbly hard as the fatty food smeels and tastes so good, but it is terrible for you. popcorn is so bad, it would be better to eat lard instead. it would be better for you!
do either of you play sports before you had kids? do any of your kids play sport that you could get involved with? you could try unplugging the telly on a weekend day times and see what you end up doing?
also.......sex is a GREAT way to loose weight! im sure thee are a million more ideas to come but there are a few to get you started!

I'm agreeing about the health suite and dance class ideas. I do Latin American which is also great for burning up the calories and very sociable too.
I would also add in a ghost walk (always fun) or historic walking tour.

If weight is a problem you should consider activities that increase your metabolism. Gyms make money by getting clients who pay for a year and leave within a month. Consider joining a tennis / badminton / squash club where there is competition rather than pedaling on a fixed bike. Nothing wrong with a gym, I go, but they can be expensive and when I see people slowly pedaling whilst reading a magazine or walking at a small childs pace on a walking machine I wonder if they realize a walk along the street would do at least as much good. Try and have your evening meal as earlier as you can ... 5pm / 6pm latest. Eating after that will turn to fat as you sleep. I found cups of tea killed the hunger in the evenings and I lost weight. An hours sport in the evening will keep your body burning fat during the night. Obviously this won't help much if you eat massive meals full of fat or sugar that later becomes fat.0
