Yes, yet another "Slow PC" topic - sorry !!!!
Had a search around, couldn't find anything relating to my particular problem, so here goes ....
I've got a ( fairly old ) PC running Windows XP home. A couple of years ago I bought extra memory, so it's now got 2Gb memory. There's loads spare, and the hard disk is less than 1/2 full.
My problem is, when I first boot up, then double-click an icon to launch an application ( e.g. Firefox ), it takes ages for the application to actually get up and running - almost 1 minute. After that, if I close the application down then fire it up again later, it's pretty much instant. So it only seems to be the first time I launch the app that it has a problem.
I've run StartUpLite to make sure there's nothing running that's not really necessary, and run CCleaner fairly regularly. I do have Firefox set to delete all cookies, browser history etc. whenever it closes down ( yeah, I'm paranoid ! ), not sure if this has any relevance. Any ideas ?

In Firefox (only) it could be checking up for updates on startup, (Tools/Options/Update) that slow it down. If any other apps are slow there may be other issues.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . This is because initially there might be lot of startup programs running.
go to run >> and type msconfig then
click startup programs and disable unused programs and restart.0 -
Thanks for the replies. I'll check the MSConfig as suggested. DebitCard, your sugestion sounds very likely - Firefox is by far the worst offender, and it is set to check for updates. I'll disable that and see how it goes. Many thanks.0

Why not back up and run a clean install? Make you that you make a regular backup of your important data, regardless of whether you run a clean install or not.
Install and run CCleaner
What is the make and model of your PC?
Download, install and run the HijackThis Version 2.0.3 installer and use the Quick Start guide to enable you to produce a log for posting here.0 -
One thing you've not done is to defragment the hard drive. Right click on the C drive in Explorer, select Properties, Tools then Defragment.0

Have you tried ccleaners registry cleaner?:idea:0

startuplite isn't a complete solution, what security software do you use? post a hijackthis log.!!

also do a disk cleanup. Maybe system restore, you may loose some documents/software but you can always revert it back.0

Thanks for all the replies. I defrag'd the disc, ran MSConfig to stop unnecessary processes running and switched of the automatic updates in FireFox. It's speeded up no end, so thanks one and all for the helpful suggestions.0
