Need 2 new tyres - price always looks good until they add on the balancing. can I skip this expense?

  • Nope, any new tyres need to be balanced or you might end up with vibration and/or a bit of a wobble...

Where are you going for your tyres? I've never been charged for balancing, unless the big places charge for it? ATS, quickfit etc etc

You could put the new tyres on the back then the lack of balancing might not have such a dramatic effect as on the front.

Though in the interest of money saving it is a false economy, some small independants might not say they are charging for balancing but you wil find that it is probably factored into the price you are paying, also from my expereince the local small tyre shops can't compete on price with the big specialist places such as Elite in Rainham, I had two Avon zz3's fitted to my wifes Clio at the weekend, £58 each at Elite, including valve and balance. the local independant could do second hand at £20 each or some chinese tyre at £51 each, branded being almost £70.

Balancing should always be included in the price, it's only the dodgy tyre/exhaust outlets that price this separately. Go to a local independent tyre fitter and stay away from overpriced crapfit, national, HiQ, ATS and any other place that has workshops in nearly every town in England.

No need to necessarily balance the rear wheels, only the front.
