Sony Vaio Display Problem

I am having to use my K series Vaio with another monitor as the screen is not displaying properly.

On boot-up (and particularly if I enter safe mode) the white on black writing is fine - just a little dimmer than I might expect. Then the screen blanks until Windows is loaded and only then displays a very feint screen. Completely unable to read the screen or see the mouse cursor, BUT it is there.

Is this likely to be a software/driver problem or the backlight?

I only got this thing powered up yesterday for the first time. It was given to me by someone else and I have spent hours cleaning it up, ran MalwareBytes, Jv16 and Ccleaner, in order to get it to crawl a little less slowly, so I have no idea what happened during its first 5 years.

The Model is PCG-K315Z.

I am rather reluctant to remove the Graphics driver in case I am then unable to see the second display too. It has a ATI Mobility Radeon 9200/64Mb built in.

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

  • Inverter, mounted in the screen bezel area. Remove a few screws around screen, disguised as rubber feet. Might be loose or dry joint on the small pcb.
