Hi all

I have been a temporary worker in the city for the last 3 or 4 years and thought I Would never going to get a full time job with security around me and as all my friends are Plumbers, Electricians Roofers etc I would give my hand a go at something that wasn't a desk job.

I applied for a Electricians course (2008) through OLCI Construction Training of which cost £6,000 interest free for a year of which I managed to get a loan from my parents to pay off as the interest was ridiculous.

The idea is you get the first half of the training Course work through the post the course send off test papers they mark them and when you finished the first half of the course they then send the second part of the course criteria.

As life turns out I managed to get a full time job and all the security I wanted so the Electrician course was pretty much forgotten about.
I rang OLCI advising that due to my circumstances changing I wouldn't be able to do the course and as I have only ever sent the first test paper off for marking and that I never received the second part of the course criteria would it be possible for not an entire refund but maybe half or something of the £6,000 the answer was a flat no and really knocked my confidence in persuing it.

I am at a loss of how to start things moving and am really looking for any advice you could give me.

Thanks for your time

James

You entered into a contract to complete the course - you now don't want to complete it - there is no entitlement to a refund, unless failure by OCLI to send the second part of the course to you can be considered as some sort of breach of contract by them. Even then, they can just send you the second part and then claim they have met their contractual obligations.

What is the point in having a contract if the other party then wants to leave early. You are in breach of contract and I will be suprised if there is something in that contract that stipulates if you leave you may loose all or some of the money you paid up front
  • Thank you for your comments. I just such a waste of money... just wished I could do something.

Is it a course you do solely at home or do you have to go into a college? If you wanted something to do you could complete the course then at least if you lost your job you would have something to fall back on.

Its a course solely done at home then as you near the end of the course you attend practical courses.
Agreed its something to fall back on but id sooner have the money :o

Well you dont have much chance of that so do the course.. you can then do all those jobs at home and at family and friends without the cost!!

  • Sure... may take a little while to justify £6,000 though :rotfl:

But thanks for all your comments :money:

My sympathies but the chances are the money would have been wasted even if you had completed the course because doing such training via postal courses and without doing a proper apprenticeship, would be of little value and you may well have had difficulty obtaining real qualifications. There are dozens of such training companies offering almost worthless training to individuals hungry for a job.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
