Didn't cost much if anything extra when I insured the wifes car through Swintons, though Admiral wanted to increase the premium.

buisiness use instead wich is 10x more money

Rubbish. When I increased cover for business use my premium went up by £10 a year.

I've had anything from £0 - £20 to add it on.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Still 40p/per mile last time I used it. A fairly decent rate all in all.

Only if you are driving a very very small car.

I haven' looked for a while but I reckon my cost per mile was over 70p on my last car.

You have to factor in depreciation etc etc.

On a lease car for example it is dead easy to calculate.

Annual lease charges divided by the normal allowance of 10,000 miles + VED (if not inc) + insurance + servicing + FUEL.

It depends if you'd have the car anyway. If you've got the car for personal use then things like insurance and tax don't come in to it.
Though certainly add a bit on top of petrol costs for wear and tear and _increased_ depreciation.

Now I will disagree with you there.

To me all costs should be added up over the period (normally a year) and calculated on a per mile basis. Otherwise you are ubsidising the cost of one against the other.

    As your management accountant.... :)

No contract after 2 years and not paying your travelling expenses, they sound delightful. They're in a win-win situation. Are they classing you as self employed?

Can't you and the rest get together and have a meeting with the employer to negotiate fair expenses(ie fuel and wear and tear) or a premium rate for those using their own vehicles?
  • Charge them for the use of YOUR car.

  • Thanks so much for all your advice. I have taken on board all your comments, and realised I am being ripped off big style, as she also doesn't pay holiday pay, an issue I am taking up with a tribunal, so this is something else to take up with them aswell. She is on a right scam! Thanks again. got all my evidence and seeking legal advice next week. Cheers:D
  • Thanks for your comments. No she certainly doesn't play fair. I reckon it costs me on average £80 - £100 per month for travelling to clients homes. No petrol money is offered, no increase for cost to use car for business.

She is on a very sticky wicket as I am taking her to a tribunal because she says she "doesn't pay holiday pay either". I have gathered up all my information, spoke to ACAS and CAB and she is in for a shock, because now on top of that I am going to raise this issue also. Off to solicitors Monday, no way is she getting away with this any longer! Thanks again will keep informed of my progress and advice others. Too many small fry employers getting away with murder!

I agree with Hintza. If you want the employee to use their personal vehicle for business use then you should also bear a share of the fixed costs. If you don't then you as an employer are unethical, immoral and a skank.
