im going to have to reread most of these post, a lot of jargon that i dont have a clue about. ofcourse the windows was installed etc when i bought it but i never even knew what a product key was until after i got my laptop back from pcworld, and i have read others posts on the web at how the numbers rub off due to heat etc and age, thanks for the replies

You've been asked by two different people now about the make and model of the machine. Is that too complicated for you to understand?

If it mattered whether you saw the difference, you wouldn't be on here asking us now, would you?
    I'll leave you to it.

Different makes and models may have different installation/recovery media and/or a recovery partition.
If people don't know that then they may not be able to give you best advice.

How then do you explain a Windows reinstallation for a laptop screen problem?

Why on earth would they want to do that? They are perfectly well aware that the Product Key can be retrieved from a working installation of Windows by any number of key-finder programs!

How does that work with a hard drive failure or a Windows installation so corrupted you can't install said key retrieval software or run it?
Microsoft can be validly blamed for a number of things, but suggesting they manufacture deliberately rub-offable product keys is rather pushing the envelope, IMHO!

I'll put to you this. This is what they used to be like - paper with the number printed on and then coated in plastic and there was nothing wrong with them:

And this is what they're like now - paper with a metallic strip through where the print gets completely worn away after a year of use on someones knee:

As you can see above, its already started to wear through and the black ink is beginning to fade.
The OP is in a position now where the only way they can put on a legit copy is to buy another licence and get a new CoA. Hence Microsoft getting paid twice.

I've repaired many Vista laptops requiring a re-install of Windows where there's no recovery disc/partition so you're having to install using a generic DVD but are screwed because the licence key is worn away to the point of being completely illegible.

That is just pathetic...now playing the victim . If you don't know the "ins and outs' of computing" why would you make such a 'patronising' statement
i dont see what difference it would make saying the make and model..

How could you see the difference if you proclaim that you don't know the 'ins and outs'?

Does that mean the we have to justify our every instruction if you don't see the point?

In that case, it's best that you do it by yourself.

If you still need help later, perhaps you can come back with a more 'adjusted' attitude.

The people who can help you aren't going to do so if you make it difficult for them. It's not 'rocket science'.

Three requests for make and model number resulting in a desultory "is an esytems laptop" and " i dont see what difference it would make saying the make and model".

You proclaim to be a sober eighteen year old. I would have guessed ten.

Grow up and learn to take instruction without throwing your toys out of your perambulator.

That is not the case, but I certainly won't be the one advising the OP how to fix the problem.

I don't blame you, with the attitude the OP has I think they should just be left to go and buy a new Windows key.

I don't want it to seem as if I'm picking on the OP. Hopefully they will read it in a quiet moment and reflect.
