Hi
I have internet with virgin media.
I have a D-link dir 615 router which is connected to the modem downstairs. I have good signal downstairs but upstairs its very poor. I have another router which is a Netgear wgr614, I wanted to set this up upstairs, so that I could have good signal upstairs too.
I would like to know is this possible? If so would someone please be kind enough to give me step by step instructions on what I need to do.

Many thanks in advance

I have a couple of wireless routers - one downstairs and one upstairs at opposite ends of the house.

Assuming the first router is already set up, you need to plug the second router into the first using one of the LAN (not WAN) ports on the back of each router.

You'll need to disable DHCP on the second router, give it an IP address, disable the WAN adaptor, and make sure that it's on the same subnet as the first. You might need to specify the IP address you've used on the first router too.

I don't think it's possible to set up a single wireless network with two routers, so you'll probably want to make sure that the routers have different SSIDs and broadcast on different channels.

    Hope this helps... :-)

You can and there will be an automatic handover between the two as you move around the house - not a good idea if you are downloading though as you still get a disconnect/reconnect.

I've set up a Fonera+ this way but on a different subnet to avoid DHCP problems.

Yep you can - I have 4 routers, all using the same ssid, and i'd recommend having the channels at least 2 steps apart...
so router 1 on channel 1, router 2 on channel 3 etc to reduce interference.

Oh, cool - you learn something new every day! I'll have to give that a go. Thanks!

Much simpler to get a wirelesss extender, from £30 as it's almost a plug'n'go install - you place it midway towards the area that needs to be covered. Sell the spare router on Ebay.

Have you connected them together using ethernet cable?, I don't think they will play unless you do so. If you have you need to switch off DHCP on the remote one, and they need the same SSID and different channels, and set the remote one to use an IP address on the same network with a different address of course.
