    what does the keyring say

    what does the rev guage go upto

    open the bonnet, are there are clues like a turbo, or the letters "hdi"

    try getting an insurance quote on the reg plate, it will tell you

    use the ask mid service to tell you the fuel type

    open the fuel cap and sniff it

    what is the engine size

    Sometimes I think the driving test is far too easy.

    How can somebody not know the difference between diesel and unleaded petrol, though your friend is correct a diesel pump nozzle will not fit in a petrol filler.

    Open the fuel flap - bend down and have a good sniff close to the fuel filler pipe - does it smell of petrol or diesel???
