  • you should be able to claim child tax credits and possibly working tax credits
  • is your wifes earnings figure correct?
I would have expected that even with the minimum wage at 16 hours/week...annual salary would be around £5k ?

I don't think any TAX or NI should be payable on her salary?
    Is her tax code correct?

You will not qualify for WTC or full CTB. You need to apply for CTC.
    Gone ... or have I?

As well as checking your entitlements, do download the budget planner on the free tools section of this website and work through each line to reduce outgoings, such as finding cheaper tariffs for your service provider. This is a popular site for cheap nutritious meals which some members of this website have helped to devise to provide meals for £100 per month for a family of 4.

The govt directions on benefits show a downward trend and mortgage rates can only go up. Can your wife find extra hours? Currently your household gets between £1900 and £2100 per month depending on your overtime (your netwage of 1540 to 1750, child benefit of £146 and wife's income of £215), leaving you with around £225 to £275 per week after CT and mortgage is paid, so if your income can't increase through work or benefits, then your household expenses must be pared back. This site helps you with budgeting and frugality. I believe the 'old style money' boards are good for tips and advice, plus the links at the top of the page which advise on best deals for insurance, phones, energy etc.

It's not a great sum for a family of 4 where both adults work. My yardstick comparison is that a non-working single parent with 2 children will get nearly £200 per week in their hand, with CT and rent paid through LHA, composed of £65 Income Support, £33 child benefit and £100 child tax credits. Also, they get to keep any child support provided by the non-resident parent without it affecting their benefits and if their rent is less than the LHA limit, they get to keep the first £15 difference, too.
