Replacing a light, with a downlight - what price should I expect?

Hi. In my room I would like to replace my light with a recessed downlight. I have a basic light hanging from the ceiling, and I guess it requires a tiny bit of rewiring.


I'm not confident to do this myself, and will have to get an electrician out for it. Before I start hunting around for one, do you have any ideas how much I would expect to pay for them to replace it for me?

It might not be as easy as that! Where the current light is hanging it is likely to be fixed to a joist. You won't be able to put the down-lighter in where the joist is, so it will have to go to one side or the other of the existing light, then a hole filled in the ceiling.

The actual wiring is easy enough, fixing the light could be fiddly - time consuming, not difficult.

In all honesty though, 60-90 minutes labour if you're prepared to tidy up the decoration afterwards.

Hi bubbahorten - It ain't a staightforward swap
Standard Downlights are usually fitted with a 50watt bulb which gets very, very hot - So much so that in the wrong place they are a Fire hazard - This problem can be overcome if they are fitted with an Energy saving UFL bulb which runs much cooler, but these won't give that really bright spot light effect
