Sorry MJSONE, Huckster and I were having a discussion on your query, I think Huckster has learned something new thanks to your post which is good news as he is very active in helping posters on MSE and Moneysupermarket (Where he has a special unique medal) so he may be able to use it to help people on there.
What you need to do is ring the Insurers and speak to a superviser, be polite and refer them to the ombudsmans guidance which is the second link I provided http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/ombudsman-news/36/terms-of-policy.htm This basically says that if you take out a policy, then book a holiday and if after this your health changes that the Insurer cannot normally restrict the cover and / or charge you more. The Ombudsman is basically saying it's the risk the Insurer takes. The other links I give specifically cases 64/08 and 64/06 also give case histories on a similar basis to yours.
If the Insurers try and ignore this then advise them you will make an official complaint, you simply send a letter to them (The address to send it is in your policy) marked official complaint. State your case which is basically the ombudsman's guidance and they then have to investigate and report back to you. (Send it recorded delivery). If you are still not happy you can take the matter to the Ombudsman which is free to you but costs the Insurer £500 although it will take a long time for them to give a ruling.0 -

MJ - as your question has been answered, I'd just like to add, that because of these sort of cases it is often more economical for a annual policy (considering the relatively low increase from some single trip policies) and you are covered for other travel. Well worth considering.C. (Ex-Pat Brit)
