Does doing loads of quotes put the premium up?

Sounds weird, but I do loads of quotes to see if I can insurance on various cars, as I'm always thinking about changing my car.

At less than 20 though usually it's a declined quote or £5000 or something stupid. I've tried using different dates of birth as it's my birthday soon, so I'd put another month on just to see what the quote would be like if I were a year older.

Anyone had any experience with this, and if so, 'resetting' it so to speak?

Oddly enough it happened to me recently. I was about to change my car and got lots of quotes using the comparison sites.

I started with the basic car and then got more quotes for the same car but with various optional extras fitted (who knew tinted windows puts the premium up.) The best (cost vs cover etc.) original quote was provided by Moneysupermarket so I went back and hit the 'buy' button only to find that my 'guaranteed for x days' quote was now over 30% more expensive only two days later. Starting new search with the original basic car details just produced a list of inflated quotes. Try as I might I couldn't get it back to the original 'guaranteed' price so in the end I gave up and picked the next best quote on the original list. That hadn't changed at all so in the end I was only down about a fiver... even though on a new search the same company was coming out a lot dearer.

  • Have you tried doing the search again with a new browser ie. firefox or internet explorer. I think the "cookies" enable the companies to work out you are a returning customer and therefore the price goes up each time you revisit the web page with the same browser. I have had it happen to me when I'm trying to get the best price on flights or coach tickets. It cannot detect you are a returning customer if you use a different browser and you may find the original price is mysteriously still there. There is a way to disable cookies but that is way out of my league.

Ooh that's an interesting one. I'm exactly the same as you OP so shall be watching this space...
  • When you get the quotes off the comparison sites, make a note yourself of the quote reference number. Then when you decide to buy it go directly to the insurer to buy using the reference.

I've noticed with GoCompare that they like to "expire" the quotes after a day or two. Even though the quote was valid for 30/60 days with the actual insurance company.

Don't quote with a registration number, use make and model only

    Quote using John/Jane Doe/Jones
    And your neighbour's address

Delete cookies before going to different site or returning for a new quote.

When you're happy use real details, and a cashback site referral if appropriate.

you'll probably find that certain names push the cost up too, Stephen or Ruth will be cheap, Kyle or Chardonnay will be expensive

if you ask for quotes and want to pay over a period. The number of companies you approach can be taken into account by other companies if you apply for credit.

The neighbours will be made up with the extra junk mail as a result of that! Surely supplying their address can't be legal or even ethical or moral. At best childish?
I use Donald Duck or Michael Mouse,(yes that may be childish too) my postie is highly amused by the stuff that then arrives from a couple of companies. He's asked a couple of times if Mr duck is at home![/QUOTE]
