Domain & Hosting

Hi,

I purchased a domain name some years ago and never actually got around to using it, I merely purchased a name, then some hosting 'parked it' then thought 'eventually I'll get around to working out what to stick here and what to do with it'. Obviously sometime later and I had still no clue what to do with it. Which brings me to today, my Registration Period lapsed, so I rapidly purchased some hosting as that was for renewal too through ebay, got a good deal a few years for .99p, not a bad deal I thought with a startup.

Then as they say the 'devils in the details' as then I noticed they charge 10.00 for Domain Registration. The company I previously purchased the domain through only charged something like £3 per year so a bit of a saving there of £7 already, providing I can use them again, which brings me to my question:

Do I have to use the people who are providing my hosting to register my domain, or can I use the company I originally used to purchase the domain through?

Thank you very much for reading this and of course your eventual reply.

You can have a domain registered with one company and hosting provided by another. Just point your nameservers to your host! :)

Also included as above, it's sometimes better to register it yourself. That way you have complete ownership of the domain and if all things go up the swanny with your host you can change immediately. Some scrupulous hosts sometimes hijack your domain and hold it hostage until you pay release fees.

My hosting is done with fasthosts (I think lol) but I purchased the actual domain from nominet or something like that. Can't really remember off hand lol

if you have .co.uk domain best advice is open free a/c with 123reg and you can transfer your domain to them free, I have 400+ domains with them and webpages are easy to understand also info details to change nameservers ect is well written.
watch out for comps who overcharge or charge for things free with 123reg.co.uk........have been with them 5+ years good service ,look up website for more info.
