Oyster Card on Trains?

Hello,

Tomorrow I'm going to be going from Cutty Sark to Welwyn Garden City, I have an Oyster card but I'm a bit confused as to how I'd get a ticket, do I have to use my Oyster as far as Kings Cross and then buy a separate ticket to WGC? Or is there any sort of railcard I can buy?

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question but I've only just got my Oyster so I'm still getting used to it!

Thanks in advance :)

At this point in time, Oyster is somewhat limited to the London area. So you could probably go from Kings Cross to Finsbury Park with an Oyster card.

Welwyn Garden City however doesn't have Oyster facilities yet so yes, you will exit the underground at Kings Cross, then buy a regular rail ticket.

Are you sure it doesn't have Oyster validators? According to the same site, Wembley Stadium station also doesn't have them, but I used them on 3 separate occasions last week!

  • the furthest your oystercard will get you is Hadley wood but you would have to get off the train to touch out and then get back on so this is not really much use. your better off just getting to kings cross and buying a paper ticket from there really.

Every station within the london transport system has an oyster card facility so i have no idea why they say Wembley doesnt but welwyn does not.

A lot of national rail stations have what appear to be card readers (they're fairly simple devices). I suspect they can be enabled easily but contracts/systems behind the scenes is probably what is keeping the Oyster card spreading outside of London.

Wouldn't it be great if they merged it all into one card instead of carrying one for each city.
