Toshiba laptops

My daughter recently commenced university and with her hard earned money bought a toshiba lap top computer. Within a week something heavy fell off a shelf and dropped on the computer and smashed the screen. Toshiba picked up the computer even though we bought it from Tesco locally as this was the quickest route. They then rang with a quotation for repairing the lap top - guess what quotation was £380 (my daughter was advised that the pick up cost would be 78-67 which I was informed included insurance and safe pick up by UPS. Labour £85 Logistics £30 Parts 214-74 VAT 57-70. The computer cost £360. I then rang Toshiba myself and asked to speak to the Manager Andre. He again said they had informed my daughter what the pick-up delivery cost would be. Apparently they have a depot in Devon and one in Germany. Not believing what I was hearing my daughter on speaking to other students offered her the name of a company in Sheffield CPS computers who offered to replace the screen pick up and repair the computer for £100. Where do I go with this one Martin. Have just been informed there is a "rejection fee" if you don't decide to have it repaired with them it will cost £78-67 to get it back to my daughter. Can anyone out there shed any light on the matter?

Yep. Parts from the manufacturer cost lots compared to third party suppliers. UPS is pretty dear. Labour charge is about right for the rates they charge.
£100 from CPS is pretty cheap - worryingly so. I can't even buy a new compatible screen for under £80 and my courier charges £9 each way. I strongly suspect that they may be fitting a second hand screen. I would be charging £120-£130 depending on cost of screen plus delivery charges and you'd have to send it to me. My profit for doing it would be £30 - a 1hr labour charge.0 -
I wouldn't even waste my time sending a laptop for repair that cost £350 and under it just is not worth it!
Better off listing it on ebay as spares/repair and buying a brand new one, sadly we live in a throw away society.0 -

if you were to sell it you would need to somehow wipe the hard drive to remove all personal information before you do that.
since it was accidental damage and is therefore not covered by warranty and officail manufacturers repairs are notoriously expensive I would have never sent it to toshiba and opted for a local repair in the first place.0 -
One other thought, is the laptop covered on insurance agaisnt accidental damage, either on your home policy (which may cover student's property outside the home) or a the Uni. My daughter's uni halls are covered by some sort of general policy... though she was unsure(!) of the details.
It might be worth checking.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
very much agreed, which is why I go for a very cheap laptop (usually Advent or similar) and hope it works out. So far my £400 laptop has lasted over 3 years at full pelt every day all day and touch wood so far so goodI wouldn't even waste my time sending a laptop for repair that cost £350 and under it just is not worth it!

Please send me every single laptop you break the screen on. I'll gladly put one in and make money.
You say "sadly we live in a throwaway society". The only reason that is is because of people like you who would rather just replace something that needs a simple repair with a new item. It is because of people like you that villages in China are buried under a pile of electronic waste.
To the OP:
You can get a replacement screen fitted for under £150. You can't sell your laptop with a broken screen and buy a new replacement for £150 more. It is more economical to get it fixed, just not by Toshiba

Sensible advice throughout the whole thread; send it to this guy! I'd be happy sending mine assuming it was broke!0 -

If i buy a laptop for i don't know say £299 and it get's damaged why spend £100 - £150 on repairs when you can replace it for an extra £100 - £150? (even at those prices your risking second hand parts with minimal warranty, your not even guaranteed a qualified person doing the work!)
You get the latest os, a better spec and a years warranty not to mention other extra's???
Please explain? the cost of repair these day's compared to buying new is just ridiculous!
That is why we no longer see tv/video repair shops or even rental shops, times change not always for the better i agree so deal with it!0 -
I replaced a screen in a [FONT="]Acer Aspire 5735z back in Feb. Brand new widescreen TFT for a charge of £85. It only takes around 15 minutes to change a screen on modern day laptops but I normally charge a flat rate of £20 for the first hour on any work. In this case it was for an ex-work colleague so I dropped the charge for my time.
That too was a £350 laptop but rather than go through the hassle of finding a new laptop that met her needs, at the right price, then go through the hassle of re-installing programs and applications, moving data across, etc. she was happier just to have the screen replaced.
