Can companies get away with charging diagnostic fees for looking at laptops.
I received a leaflet saying free diagnostic checks, so I took my laptop too the shop. A fee was never mentioned during any exchange.
They gave me a service form saying a £35.00 Diagnostic fee may apply without providing any information under the conditions which it may apply. Is this legal? Can they do this?
Any advice appreciated.

They can do what ever they want. If it takes them an hour to to look at your laptop then you do not pay to have any work done they will get nothing for it. You should see hat PC world charge! I was in there a few weeks ago and they charge £30 to fix a keyboard. I can buy a new one for £5.
Ther is allways devil in the detail, nothing is ever free. either there will be a charge or they find find llsorts of problems which will obviously cost £££ to fix.
Notebooks can be very expensive to repair depending what is wrong.
If it is software related no problem, if it is hardware depending on what is wrong it might be better if the notebook is 3+ years old to buy a new one.
New HDD you can et for £50, processor fan £20, memory is v cheap. Motherboards and power is very expensive0 -

If they do free checks then ask for a free one.
No need to pay if they advertise them as being free.
It may well be that they are not as thorough as they might be but you never know.0
