Fair quote for new kitchen electrics & plumbing?

Options
I'm having a new kitchen which is being installed by the cabinet makers. However, the old one needs to be stripped out & new appliances plumbed & wired in. I've also been advised to get a new circuit board (by 2 different builders). The builder just sent me this quote (it comes to about £3000 inc vat):

Here is a breakdown of the costs these are all pre vat costing,
hot and cold supply costs may comedown if there are already good supplies near by
Removal and disposal of existing , assume appliances free cycled - £ 468
Running of hot and cold supply to sink,
cold supply to washer/dryer and dishwasher- £ 354
Rerouting gas for cooker - £ 300
Install cooker hood -
cilent supply, allowance for pipe work and vents- £168
Electrics
Cilent to supply fittings we supply all cable etc allowance for board £200
Rng mains as required £ 570
New board £ 440
Lighting £ 228
If you wish to go ahead I will vist with my electrician to confirm these costs
Should additional days be required they will be charged at £220 per day

Firstly, it is only new circuits that are required to comply with current regulations. There is no compulsion to replace existing distribution boards. If your existing is safe (and that does NOT mean complying with current regulations) that is fine. Find a sparks that is pragmatic rather than opportunistic...
Before answering the bulk of your question I have a few first.
How much change is going on in terms of changing teh basic positions of things i.e. appliances, sinks hob boiler etc? I need to know whether these are going where none exists currently or simply being juggled about.

BTW FYI I design and install bathrooms and fit kitchens.
 All together now, "Always look on the bright side of life..."
  • The gas for the cooker has to be moved across the room, otherwise appliances aren't moving very far (but they ARE moving). I'm having more sockets & ceiling lights than I have now, plus plumbing for a fridge freezer with an icemaker. The fuse box is pretty old & both builders who've seen it have said it's up to me, but the work couldn't be certified unless I had it changed. The whole existing kitchen has to be stripped out. They said it'd be about a week's work.
I'm in London & to be honest this is the only tradesperson who has actually bothered to quote (2 have played cat & mouse, 2 others never bothered to turn up when they said they would, and 1 came but didn't quote) and is willing. Hence my uncertaintanty about the cost. It seems builders here just ain't hungry enough! (Recession? What recession?!)

London or not, seems pretty expensive to me. I work for a housing association doing refurbs and we could rip out your kitchen install all new electrical sockets, lights, new gas points and hot/cold water feeds for your sink/washing machine/dishwasher and your ice making fridge freezer as well as re-board your walls and ceilings and plaster them and also install a new consumer unit within 3 days. (BTW we are Tradesmen before someone shouts dodgy council workers :P) As you say I think your biggest problem is getting someone reliable/honest and quality, whatever you do never pay upfront (If you have to then just a nominal amount) see the work progress and pay in instalments or at the end. Best Wishes.

Seems ott TBH. Whereb abouts in London are you? If you are on the outskirts, you may be better off getting a non-London based company to do the work.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • I'm in inner north east London. I contacted a company further out - they were one of the ones who made an appointment then didn't turn up (rolls eyes - I mean, why bother ringing me to arrange it then?). We originally wanted our kitchen refit to be a much bigger job: knock a wall down etc but had to give up because we couldn't find anyone to do it.
Jamclock: if you are in my area and can do the work the first week of November, then you are welcome to come & have a look. But I need to get this sorted NOW!!!!

Also, do NOT let them quote you saying it'll be extra per day. Get a fixed QUOTE, not an estimate, or they WILL drag their heels and you're job will go up!
