Windows7 Plug and Play. Is it rubbish?

USB is a terrible connection for any kind of internet (windows 7 is probably helping you out by trying to force you to upgrade to new technology
), you should really only be using ethernet or WiFi, just buy a cheap wireless router like this you can then use your new laptop either through ethernet or wirelessly and will be much better for windows 7 and for XP 0 -
Yes, it did. Depending on the device and the circumstances and, apparently, how it felt that day, sometimes XP would crash my pooter if I hadn't 'ejected' the device first.I can avoid this by "ejecting" it in the little pop up box at bottom right of the screen but XP didn't need that extra step.
Win7 is more tolerant, but it sounds like it can be temperamental sometimes as well.0 -
I apologise for being so stupid as not to be aware that Belkin make cheap rubbish.I've highlighted what the problem is. If you choose to use cheap rubbish, you get problems. The only reason Belkin is in existence is because PC World stock their detritus.
I bought it on Ebay, not from PC World.
I will sell it on to someone equally stupid.
In about 2 weeks expect a thread from some poor sap complaining about the wireless Belkin modem he bought off Ebay that doesn't work properly.

All I know is that my XP laptop never crashed when I unplugged a USB device. To be fair, Windows7 only crashes when I unplug this modem. It isn’t bothered by me plugging in and unplugging USB external drives which I do quite often.Yes, it did. The obvious MSE solution is to carry on using the USB Speedtouch wired modem, which does everything I need and want it to do. I think I am sufficiently protected with a firewall and anti virus etc not to need the extra protection of a router.
All I need to do it to remember to “eject” it in software and not to snag the cable.
I may ask Talktalk if they can supply me a free wireless router.
Thanks everyone for your comments and advice.

If you are nar your contacts end or not on contact ask your ISP for your MAC code as you are thinking of changing ISP . A cheaper offer including wireless router may well be given .

To answer your original question .. 'Windows 7 plug and play , is it rubbish?' .. I would say Windows 7 is much better at P'n'P than XP ever was!
As far as I remember you should have used the 'Eject USB Devices' icon for all such devices in XP , perhaps not doing that with your modem has corrupted it somehow!0 -
XP is pretty tolerant of unplugging without using the icon.....just sod's law says you'll do it once too often on ANY pc
......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Probably a driver problem, rather than anything to do with usb. Laptops become much more useful with a wireless router, the belkin issue may mtu related - how you are downloading these films from where?!!
