Funny that it seems to be a problem with Coop and Asda? Is something wrong with the Coop's record keeping? I ask because I bank with them, have done since the summer and have found them clueless at times. Has anyone had a problem with any other bank and Asda?
  • This has happened to me a few times with Asda,I bank with the Co-op and they told me it's because of the type of card I have,it used to be an Electron card and now they call it Visa Debit but as far as Asda is concerned it's the same thing. Unless you have more than than your spend in your account then don't do an on line shop. Tesco wont accept Electron or Visa Debit from the Co-op,why I don't know,I have to use a pre-paid card to shop with them, you can do this with Asda but you have to allow a couple of days to transfer the money. It's the type of account you hold that is the decider for these stores, totally unfair because you can't get overdrawn on them, the money has to be there.
I am expecting an Asda delivery tomorrow for about £85 and I know they will hold this amount for about 5 days on top of what they charge me so I will only be able to draw money over and above double this amount.= £170. The Co-op will release it if you are stuck though. I only ordered on line because of the weather! Next week I will put money on my pre pay card and order from Tesco.

This has just happened to me for an order I placed on 30th November to be delivered on 1st. Asda are refusing to accept any responsibility saying that it's my bank's fault. The bank say they can't refund it unless Asda tell them that they're not taking the money but Asda claim they've already done that. Apparently the money should be back in my account by Friday but that doesn't help when it's my birthday party tonight and I have NO money!!!!
I am never using Asda again and have also reported them to Watchdog. Hopefully if enough of us do that then something will be done.

This has just happened to us also! We have been left with no money and an overdrawn balance. Neither Asda or our bank (Santander) will do nothing to release the funds sooner even though we've been on to Consumer Direct, the FSA and The Banking Ombudsman. We've just got to wait for the money to go back in, which we've been told by Asda could be up to 10 working days.

I am so angry that effectively they have taken the original amount and then put the actual amount through separately. This really isn't the time of year to be without money and if we get bank charges for this then Asda will be paying them!

I have never had this happen to me with Sainsbury's or Tesco and from now on I will never ever step foot in an Asda store again! Especially since there so called "customer care" team don't give a hoot!

Tesco do accept Coop visa debit as I have used mine with them recently.
  • Tesco Direct will take the Visa Debit/Electron for books or DVDs ect; but not for groceries.
  • Hi

I too have become a victim of Asda and the apparent holding policy of funds to which they claim is the banks fault.

I placed an order on 29 December 2010 for £140.90 to be delivered the following day. Due to products being unavailable the actual charge was £121.75. However, though the £121.75 was taken from my account on the day of delivery, the original £140.90 still remains allocated. This has lead to me having no money what so ever until possibly 14 January 2011.

In addition, I had a Direct Debit due to go out on 1st January 2011, to which I have now received a bank charge.

This is totally unacceptable to be left in such dire straights.

I have shopped with Asda for many years and it is only the last few orders I have had these problems with.

The bank say they cannot re-allocate the funds to my account until asda has withdrew its claim on the money. Asda say it is the bank who have the money and they have no access to re-allocate the money.

Does anyone know what can be done about this?
  • It isn't the bank's fault it is Asda who charge twice, they charge for your original order and then when they deliver to you they charge again, they should do a release on the first amount but they make you wait a few days. I don't know if they make interest on it! Providing you have loads of money in the account or you use a credit card you wouldn't even know about it!

I've reported their practice to the FSA, The Banking Ombudsman and Consumer Direct. I guess the more of us that do it the better chance of it stopping. Thing is, I never had this problem with them before and I've shopped with them several times. Never again though!

  • I never knew about this problem and have shopped with Adsa online for 6 months. They won't be getting another order off us
