Hounded by Debt collectors

Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so forgive me in advance.
I moved into my place about 18 months ago and have been getting letters and telephone calls from debt companies ever since for the previous tenant.
Just not sure what to do how to stop calls letters as I am not the person they are looking for. Have told some companies on the phone but without success.
This also makes if it difficult for me to get credit, even though I have checked my credit profile and nothing shows up.
How do I stop the debt collectors? is it the housing association problem?
Kev

Hi
Your credit file is not linked to the previous tenant and will not be affecting your ability to get credit. Addresses cannot be black listed. So it may be some other reason you are struggling to get credit, remember it is much harder now for people to get credit than it used to be (are you on the electoral roll?).
What have you been doing with the letters so far? are you sticking them back in the letter box marked as not as this address or moved away?
You could write to the companies calling you to insist that your telephone number is removed from their system under the data protection act, re-iterating that the person they are chasing does not live at your address or have your telephone number.
Some people in your situation have got a new phone number.
Aside from that frustrating as it is I would just ignore them/hang up.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Other peoples bad credit will not affect yours unless you are financially linked to them, ie joint account.
I would advise ignoring the calls and just say it's not you and hang up. Don't bother speaking to them on the phone and definitely don't give them any of your details. Send any mail back marked as "not known at this address". They should eventually get the message. If you are still having problems, then as an extreme you could change your phone number and don't call them from the new number so that they do not get it from you.
Others may be able to offer further advice.::: Total Paid Since LBM (27/05/10): £4639.85 Official Debt Gone!! :T ::::AThat money talks, I don't deny, I heard it once, it said "Goodbye"~ VSP2011: #104 ~

Could Register with TPS, then complain to them about whoever is pestering you, go to their site (Telephone Preference Service), remember to get name/telephone No etc of who it is and their telephone Number to record on complaint, can all be done on internet.0

If they call, cluck like a chicken at them.
As for the letters, tape them to a brick and send them back so they'll have to pay postage LOL"We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -

I am sure BT may be able to help you out if you say you are getting silent and abusive calls. Change of number etc. Failing that enquire about choose to refuse. Plus talk to the housing association about it.0

I think changing my phone number will help, letters go back marked not at this address.
The reason I found out was a letter was marked for the occupier...
Think credit problems are more related to the times we live in.
Thank you for all your advice

Working it off - please don't do that... it could permanently damage the hearing of someone calling and could be seens as causing bodily harm as it was intentional...
I DO like the returning of letters attached to a brick... especially if you are sure they'd get the bill and RM doesn't end up with the cost
Also PLEASE do not report the calls as abusive or stalking - the service for this is there to help those genuinely being stalked and pestered with perverted calls or people trying to scare them. Abuse of this service could prevent someone getting a quick response who REALLY need it...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

I..
I would second Mrs Tine - if you do this you could cause acoustic shock and permanent hearing damage to someone who, let's face it, is only doing their job (no matter how annoying it may be). I work with staff in a telephony environment (not debt collection or sales:eek:) and if that happened to one of my staff we would report it to the police without hesitation.

As telephony is digital along some part of its route now, the maximum volume which can be transmitted is limited by the largest number the system can transmit. The system will be designed to prevent injury.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
