Ariston washing machine

I have a Ariston Margherita 2000 washer/dryer. I've had it for 8 years and although the dryer function packed up years ago (a common problem with washer/dryers so I am told) it still washes really well. However this morning I have gone to use and and when it started I just got a whirring noise for a few seconds then the programme selector dial just clicked around 360 degrees until it got to the stop.
I tried some different settings and they all did the same. I then turned it off at the socket thinking I would pop the top off and have a look but thought I'd wait ten seconds then turn it back on and try it again and it is now working.
I have just been to check on it and it has been going away quite normally now for 10 minutes. Has anyone experienced this before, is it a blip and does anyone have any advice/tips for me?

In case anyone else has a similar problem, I have fixed it by simply cleaning the filter which is under a panel at the bottom front of the machine, I had no idea it was here. Lift the panel off and just unscrew it. Put a towel down as it will be full of water, my filter had 75p blocking it and now it is running fine. A quick easy diy fix that could have cost me a lot more if I had gotten a repair man out.

Absolutely ! seven years and I am really happy, just don't want to have to spend money on a new one , plus it still looks brand new.

I've had to soak the coins as they were black and I can tell you cillit bang doesn't work on coins like it does in the advert.
