Faulty 9mth old PS3, got receipt, only reconditioned replacement offered?

Bought Dec 09, got receipt (asda). The receipt referred me to Sony, who I rang and they were really helpful on the phone.
Son had tried everything, different TV, sockets, cables, controller etc. Sony ran through it all with me, and asked me to reset it, and still no better (lines through the game screen).
So yes they will replace it for me by courier, fantastic I thought.
When I rang back to sort a delivery slot they then said that it is a reconditioned one. I have quizzed them about it, and they said it has all their rigourous manufacturers checks same as a new one. I would get a three month warranty, as in that time any faults would become apparent.
They said it 'could' be an excess stock one ( I doubt it from the conversation!)
What do you think? Is this right what they aree offering me?
I have an old PS1 and PS2 from years ago still working, and this cost much more and yet they are offering me a second hand one!
I have searched online for an answer and cant really find an answer.
Should I try ringing Asda?
I would appreciate any advice.
Thank you

I would try asda if its less than 12 months old.Your contract is with them for the first 12 months. My brothers 18 month old ps3 had yellow ring of death was purchased from gamestation but he was offered a repair. Was collected and repaired for free.0

OP, why do you think Sony should provide you with a brand new model, you seem to forget yours is over 9mths old and as such you are entitled to a like-for-like replacement not new-for-old. You couild, of course contact the retailer as above and see if they will initiate a repair.0

Asda will normally replace like for like.
We took some hair things down there with no box and just the reciept and they changed them there and then. Asda have an excellent returns policy."We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -

D'ya know what most shops' procedure is with sony products (at the insistence of sony)?
It's ring the same helpline the customer did and instead of the courier collecting the item and then delivering the refurbished one to the customer, they do it to the shop, and it takes longer to get back to the customer.
PSPs have a 180 day "dead on arrival" condition so they can be swapped easily because the shop gets a refund from the manufacturer for the faulty unit, but PS3s are 28 days.
If you've arranged something with sony, then you may as well stick with it because it's highly unlikely with low margin items like consoles you'll get a straight swap.0 -
Can I just say thank you to the kind people who responded to my message (with the exceptionof neilmcl who i thought was rather rude!)
I have just been to Asda, and gained a full refund! I now need to purchase a new console online, so that also gives me the option to look for a good price too!
I rang and cancelled Sony replacement. I would like to say that Sony had a fantastic customer service section, I have rung about 4 or 5 times now, and every member of staff was extraordinarily helpful.
So, great result, thank you!0 -
I was being rude because I gave you a factual and to the point answer to your query?0

OP, can you please point out just how Neilmcl was being rude?0

I felt like I was being spoken to as though I was an idiot. I just came on to ask for help, not to be patronised, actually. I apologise for my comment if your point was not intended in a rude way, but that was the manner that i felt you implied.0

I have to admit I agree with her. The tone wasn't very nice and the post not very helpful apart from implying she wanted more than she was entitled to.
Glad you got it sorted.I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!0 -
Sony do replace PS3's with recon models during the warranty period which is something I'm not keen on. You could have hardly used yours then it's replaced with one thats been on 24/7, I don't think that's right.
But luckily Asda gave you a refund and if I was you I'd buy another one from them even if you can get a better price on line. You never know a new one may go wrong as well.0
