Spam in BOLD typeface

I'm on XP and use AVG Free and MS inbuilt protection. I regularly add addresses to my MS "Blocked Sites" facility.

All good, BUT I still get spam arrive in my Inbox and Junk (for Viagra, Watches, Pharmaceuticals from Canada etc)

They are in bold typeface and this cannot be entered into my "Blocked Sites" facility.

Anyone else have this problem? How to get rid of it? HELP HELP HELP!!!

Just enter as normal, the systems only use standard text and disregard text type. It is a wast of time entering the from spam e-mail addresses as they are all forged/non existant and change every time.

You should install some reliable Antivirus software (not that junk AVG that doesn't seem to actually stop viruses.....)

There are a number of good free ones around.

won't help your spam isssue i'm afraid but will help you avoid more serious virus/malware problems further down the line.

    Thanks Aerostar,

BUT these annoying ones do stay the same. It's just that my "Blocked Sites" facility that actually works well normally, has no chance to work at all as it will not accept them.

The only difference between these and the usual rubbish is that they are in BOLD FACE.

You can only enter lower case and normal text into the "Blocked Sites" facility and there is no way to embolden the entry. So it persists and I need a way to defeat this ongoing and annoying problem.

    Aerostar,

Here are the site addresses that I can't get rid of: - DON'T THINK ABOUT GOING THERE!! I HAVE LEFT OUT A COUPLE OF OBVIOUS LETTERS

    Member.USA.Cialis13@yah--.com
    most.PharmacyyStore3@yah--.com
    hi.LifePharmaccy1@yah--.com

Look at the "funny" spelling and the capitals used. Bear in mind they all come in in BOLD TYPEFACE just as I've shown them.

Does this give any clues that could help??

    Regards

I think you are probably a little confused.

What you are listing there are email addresses. These are something you can send an email to. The individual name is the bit before the @ sign; the bit after the @ sign is where it is located. Ones at yahoo.com , gmail.com, hotmail.com are free email addresses that you can easily create. Because they are free lots of the possible names most obvious spellings have been used up. It's just like getting a letter that says to reply to Box 223 at some address. There's nothing bad about that address, some of the boxes may be used by perfectly good people as well.

So the email address is not a website, which is probably why you can't block it. You could block yahoo.com, but it's a perfectly safe website.

Neither capital letters nor bold face nor any font has any relevance to either emails or web addresses. Fred@yahoo.com goes to the same place as FRED@Yahoo.com or FrEd@yahoo.com.

Chris55 - plenty of good advice in your reply, but this last bit isn't strictly true.

I said pretty much the same as the above here a while back, and someone pointed out that the SMTP "standards" mandate that the part to the right of the @ sign are not case sensitive, but it's at the discretion of the operator of an end-user mail system (e.g. yahoo.com) whether to route Fred@yahoo.com and FrEd@yahoo.com to the same or different mailboxes.

Having said that, I've yet to come across anyone that doesn't treat the whole address as case-insensitive...

Thanks a lot Chris for your knowledgeable reply. I am not a boffin at all but have learned gradually to get around and use and enjoy the internet.

But where do these stupid things come from?

I haven't the need or desire to obtain Viagra or Cialis or use a pharmacy store or buy hooky anything or an imitation watch or whatever.

They are certainly unsolicited by me.

They keep on arriving in my Junk Mail every day and the bit before the @yahoo.com varies spelling and capital letters. My virus checker obviously doesn't like them and directs them into the Junk folder. Is there anyway to prevent this?

    Best regards

they come form everywhere and nowhere, mainly hijacked computers in a botnet, if they are spam then your antivirus is correct to put them in your spam folder, you shouldnt really have to keep manually adding the addresses to a blacklist as your antivirus will have an automatically updating list.

what email provider are you using? does it not have any spam prevention? gmail is very good at spam protection and when you add them into outlook or windows live mail you can select not to download the spam folder so the messages do get to your system, or you can just use the web interface for both.

Thanks Dogmary. I have downloaded and installed it now.

Certainly looks impressive. I will test it out over the next few days.

    Best regards
