Speed Cameras

Does anyone know what speed you have to be travelling at to be fined by speed cameras? ie, is it 10% over the limit?

For example, in a 30mph zone, is the limit 33mph? So if you are travelling faster than that, it should catch you?

Or in a 60mph zone, it will catch you if you are doing more than 66mph?

I only ask because I was doing 70mph on a dual carriageway, which turned into a single carriageway, and at that exact point there was a speed camera. I slammed the break but not as early as I would have liked, so I was doing somewhere between 60 - 70mph when I went past the camera.... now I don't know whether to expect a fine in the post! I didn't see a flash, although it was really sunny at the time.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Well there used to be a guideline (dont think it is really taken much notice of now) where it was 10% plus 2 - ie, 35 in a 30, 46 in a 40, 57 in a 50 and so on. But you hear of people getting done for less than those guidelines.

Anyhow dual carriageways are speed limit of 70mph so you should be safe. Were there white lines on the road? Did you see a flash.

Either way they are meant to send the NOP (notice of prosectuion) within 14 days - so sweat for a fortnight then if you havent received it then you are safe!

Well it was a duel carriageway, but the camera was just after the point where the road turned into a single carriageway! So I'm guessing the limit was 60mph.
There were white lines on the road, and I didn't see a flash, but as I said, it was a really bright and sunny day, so I don't know if it would actually be possible to see the flash. Thinking about it, do they always flash regardless of how bright it is? And is it feasible that you'll always see the flash no matter how bright the day is?

    The ACPO GUIDELINES were 10% + 2mph.
However, any speed over the limit is an offence.
    All car speedos overread too.
So, generally you can travel with the speedo showing up to 10% over the limit and you'll normally be close or slightly over the limit. This is why people complaning about being caught doing 35 in a 30 limit miss the point - their speedo would have been showing 40mph or slightly more.

Anyway, 70 indicated on a 60 limit will be borderline. Your real speed could have been 65mph and that might be within the tolerance.

Prepare for the usual MSE speeding onslaught....

Oh yes, Gloucestershire has something like 50 camera sites and two film units between them.

It's generally 10% + 2 mph but usually a lot stricter if there's a speed camera near roadworks on a motorway rather than the usual static cameras.

If you've activated a camera the NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution) must be sent to the registered keeper within 14 days.

It all depends, but the reality is if they set a speed limit of 70 at such a point for the camera to go off, it probably ran out of film in ten minutes :). Plus most cameras don't have film most of the time.

If you were doing 90 you might want to be worried, <70 I doubt there's much risk. Personally I don't know how anyone can drive in this country without a speed camera detector, and they're pretty cheap these days... otherwise you waste all your time looking for cameras rather than watching the road for hazards.

well some of the newer cameras (very annoyingly) don't need film and have a internet type link to the police (yes i got done by one of these!). but hopefully it's not one of these new ones because, lets face it, you weren't doing anything remotely dangerous!!!

it's usually 10% +3 that'll get u done by a camera, so to acheive that (69mph) your speedo would prob indicate 75 or more.
