This should be done in a dental hospital setting, and I believe they are completely wrong to be referring it back out again. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -

thats what we cant believe is happening, as I said previous passed from pillar to post. We are even having problems speaking to the dental hospital, she is either never there or when you do get an appointment she refers it out again or takes ages to send letters out, hence its taken over 2 years.
We may contact the PCT and see what they say.
thanks for your help.0 -

I have some experience of this and my son was referred to an oral surgeon on the NHS. A couple of his milk teeth did not fall out and the new tooth instead of growing down and pushing out the milk tooth was growing inwards across the roof of his mouth. He had oral surgery and they freed up the tooth which by now was right in the very centre of the roof of his mouth, then they lassoed it (really they did!) and every month our so pulled it towards where they wanted it to be. He was transferred from the oral surgery to the orthodontic people and had various braces and procedures for about 3 years but he has a wonderful set of teeth now.0

My 13 year old daughter attended for a routine check up, xray etc. The dentist said she needed a deep filling in a molar refilled. Drilled out exposing the root and put some stuff in and then filled it with a white filling. Before leaving she said if she gets pain to get her a course of antibiotics and if that did not work she would need root canal treatment. She had no pain or problems until she meddled. 1 week later guess what she has pain and sensitivity. Sounds like she should have left alone or not drilled so deep??
Should she have antibiotics or will this this just increase bacterial resistance in that tooth? is it better to go straight to canal root treatment / would you go to a canal root specialist? we are NHS and she would get it free but having read up it sounds like you stand better chance of success with private or more experienced ??
done some phoning around found someone who does nothing but RCT and £500 sounds reasonable ,0 -
Aw thanks hethmar. The procedure on Weds *SEEMS* to have helped :T I don't have the horrible throbbing bang-your-head-against-a-wall pain now, though I am still very sore (think that might partly be the stitches). Am keeping everything crossed that it continues to improve. In to the dentist again on Tues for review - they must be SO SICK of me!0

My Sister had root canal treatment, and there was some issue with the colour of the filling.
Basically she wanted a white filling, but this couldn't be done on the NHS, so she was williing to pay for the filling and get the rest on the NHS.
But you can't go half private half NHS so she had to have a temporary filling, then go back a week later for a white one, which was done privately. Was a bit of a complicated way round it but that was the only way.0 -
Hi there, ive just spent all morning reading the posts on Root Canal Treatment.
Over 1 week ago i woke up with toothache, i attended my detal surgery and saw my dentist, she said it was an abcess on 1 of my back teeth on the right hand side and prescribed antibiotics, as i have a rather large filling in this tooth she recommended i have root treatment. When i heard thoses dreaded word i started to panic, she told me i would be completly numbed up and wouldnt feel a thing. I took my Amoxicillin for 5 days, the pain was still there so i went back and was given a prescription for Metroniadazole, for five days. After completing them i was still in pain.
I made an appointment with my GP who prescribed Diclofenic and told me to return to my Dentist. These tablets helped some of the pain but i was still experiencing the dull throb, i felt completly exhausted fighting the pain.
That night (Friday) i called NHS 24, the made me an appointment with an emergancy dentist at my local hospital the next day (Saturday).
When i met the dentist he asked me lots of questions about my abcess and how much pain i was in. He told me he was going to numb my mouth and drill down into my filling to relieve some of the pressure, i was a little anxious of this as i had been told most detists wont touch a tooth with an abcess as normally the injections doesnt numb the area enough. He gave me 2 injections. My mouth felt numb but i could feel the very sensitive tooth, he said this was not a problem and that he would start drilling, this part was fine i could feel no pain. He then had a little poke and prod around, at one point i nearly hit the roof, the pain was excruciating, my whole body jerked and my leg shot up, ( i think i nearly kicked the poor guy ) He then filled the hole with a temperory filling and gave me a note to take to my dentist to tell her what i have had done, i had thought i would have been given more antibiotics but he said id had enough. I left the hospital in tears as i found the procedure traumatising and VERY painful. I was shaking so much i couldnt drive home.
Later that night when the injection wore off i was pleasantly surprised to find my tooth didnt hurt and there was only a slight sensativity.
My concern now tho is .......
1. will the abcess go away on its own ?
2. will the root treatment hurt like this ?
3. will i need more antibiotics ?
I am absolutly terrified as to what to do. I had nightmares last night about it all. If i have the tooth out will my other teeth move round to fill the space ??? I know this wont be too visable from when i smile, but the thought of loosing it scares me. I still have the tooth behind it then my wisdom tooth also. Will i still be able to eat normally ???
Sorry for the long post, im not normally afraid of dentist but this whole procedure scares me senseless :money:0
