root canal treatment - NHS and private costs & pros and cons

Thanks Toothsmith, I don't think they have x-rayed it so I'll ask them to do this next time I'm there.
The dental hospital made me a mouth guard for the grinding after I developed pain and crunching in the temperomandibular (sp?) joint. Unfortunately when using it, most mornings I'd wake up to find that in the night I had removed it and placed it neatly on the bedside table, without any knowledge of doing this!!
Perhaps I should give it another go, as most mornings I'm waking up with a sore jaw.0 -
Definitely!
Tooth grinding can be very destructive. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
root canal
Hiya. I wonder if you could give me some advice please.
I had a root canal filling last tuesday. 2 canals gave me no pain at all but the 3rd one made me jump every time the dentist poke in it. She knew this, however she continued to fill it (it was very awkward and the filling would not go in easily). An amalgam filling was then put on top.She warned me that because it had been awkward it might be sensitive for a day or 2.Well, I still can't eat on it.Pressure on the nerve is what i think i can feel .Should she have gone ahead and filled it even though i could feel pain(i did have anaesthetic).I am not sure whether to go back yet or wait for a couple of weeks.Your advice would be gratefully received.Thank you so muchI want money..........that's what I want !!:j0 -
sorry, not toothsmith, but if you're still in pain i would ring first thing tomorrow morning to try and speak to the dentist. they may say that it's normal or they may get you in for an appointment. but i wouldn't just suffer without checking.
i recently had a filling which hurt for a week afterwards, it just took a long time to settle down. my root canal on the other hand was fine almost immediately, so i guess it can vary a hell of a lot!:happyhear0 -
Kazzy sent me the same question via PM, which I answered before I saw it here.
Basically I said pretty much what you did melancholly! How to find a dentist.

I'd like advice on how successful or otherwise it would be to get it done again?
I've more issues with my mouth in the last 12 months ever since seeing the dentist I attend now, than I have had over the last few years and I'm still uncertain whether it's just sheer bad luck or whether he's maybe not that great so I'd appreciate impartial opinion.
I got a root canal done around May time and over the last fortnight the tooth has become sore whenever pressure is applied (so no eating on that side) and also flares up a bit with heat.
I cant put up with it anymore and will have to get treatment but if it is redone is it likely to be successful second time around or even less so?
It cost me a fair bit to get done in the first place so I'm a bit wary of shelling out loads more, especially since I have lingering niggles about his work.0 -
Im no expert, but have had alot of work done on my teeth.A root canal filling wont necessarily last for ever, i had one done and a year later had to have the tooth removed.
I also had pain in an upper tooth, but when i had treatment finished on a lower tooth (both back teeth) the pain went, this can happen.
I wouldent leave it incase you have an infection, i know you will have to pay but its better than being in pain all the time.

Unfortunately root canal treatment do fail. Mine did but it was a few years longer than yours. Turned out there was still infection remaining which wasn't cleared out properly
ended up having the whole thing done again.
In the end that failed (total period from start to finish was 10 years) and I had to have the tooth removed in the end. They couldn't root canal treat it for a 3rd time.
If you tooth is tender, then there could be an infection. You'll need to go back to your dentist or alternatively seek a 2nd opinion.0 -
You need to go to the dentist, it may be as simple as just a round of antibiotic, you don't know until they look at it, but if its giving you pain you need to get it done.
If you want advise try here, you will get advise from dentists http://www.allaboutteeth.co.uk
As for having more trouble with you teeth lately have you had a bad illness or a lot of stress in the last year? They can effect your teeth. I have had so many much problems with my teeth since breastfeeding and stresses that came with having my little one, I've started taking vitamin suppliments to try and replenish them, I can't wait til I actually get to have a check up where I don't have to have some work done.0
