They sometimes can be sore afterwards. Antibiotics will only help if it's an infection. It might well be just inflammation following all the prodding about with the tooth.

Is the dentist private or NHS?

If private, there may well be a helpful message on the answerphone and you might be able to get in touch with an emergency dentist who'll re-open his surgery to look at you if it gets too bad.

If you're on the NHS, it will be the inconsistancy of NHS Direct I'm afraid, although some areas aren't too bad.

If it's infection, the abs should help, but you may need to have it looked at again afterwards. If it's inflammation, it should settle down and painkillers should help.

Either way DO NOT HOLD ANYTHING WARM AGAINST YOUR FACE. People sometimes do, and it makes everything 10 times worse.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Bit like putting a paper bag over your head in the event of nuclear attack!

Have you tried paramol? it has dihydrcodiene (sp) and paracetamol in (comes in a black box) and I've found that to work pretty well when using with ipuprofen. If you really can't bear it, get yourself an 'out of hours appointment' with an emergency doctor, i've had to do this before and when I explained how bad the pain was they gave me some proper strong painkillers till I got to the dentist. hth and I feel your pain! Take care xXx

i was given an antibiotic that name escaped me , metrozonidol i think. it works different to other ABs, this one works on bugs that live without oxygen or something. it sorted my abcess out a treat.

hope you get help with it soon and the pain goes soon, there is nowt worse than a raging toothache.

i dont like taking codeine as it really spaces me out. esp solpadol that i was given before, jesus i was off the planet!

I had a root canal before christmas, I was in pain for over a week, the pain dissapeared christmas morning (thank god). I only needed iburofen, this numbed the pain enough.
I dont think you should be experiencing the level of pain that would bring you to tears days after having the root canal. I would ring the dentist asap, good luck.

Solpadine Max are the best strength painkillers on market. Not sure if I'm allowed to say so. Much sympathy coming your way from me. x

    Hi Toothsmith,
I want to thank you for your reply to my post a while ago. It influenced me to go ahead and see an endodontist. It set me back £650 but the care and treatment I got was great. It turned out in the end that I did have that 4th root canal. Worth every penny :cheesy:
