laptop screen sizes

I'm looking for a new laptop for my gf, she currently has a 15.6 inch screen laptop and I'm wondering if 13 inch will be too small? Lots of them seem to have HD screens now as well.

Only you (or she) can answer this. I have a 17" and it's about right for me.

What is the laptop used for primarily?

This is just my view - If you need a laptop for work/study or to take it from the house regularly for any other reason, then keep the screen size and weight down. If however, the only reason you have a laptop is so it can be brought out and put away more easily than a desktop at home, the get as large a screen as you can.

It sounds like your gf falls into the latter. I personally would not go smaller than she currently has, and in all honestly would go bigger.
Mine is 18" and it's a good comfortable size to watch films, tv and surf. The size and weight aren't an issue as it only lives either on my lap or by the side of my chair (or very occasionally in the spare bedroom if I need to print something!)

Just make sure it has the right spec for what she will be using it for.

A thing I often notice with laptop screens is that the back lighting is often uneven with the lower part of the screen showing more "back light bleed" than the top of the screen.

This is not good news for viewing movies, as dark scenes will show obvious back light bleed.

Unless portability is important I would think twice about buying a laptop if movies are one of the main intended functions.
