Thinking of becoming P/T self employed, need benefit advice

This is my situation. I'm a full-time student with a teenage son at college. I receive full student loans/grants, some H/B and get T/C. I am thinking of doing some P/T work on a self-employed basis, what I'm trying to find out is, how will T/C & H/B work out what I'm entitled to, if my earnings are going to vary from week to week? Also students that work for an employer can claim their tax back, will I be able to do this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

You give an estimated annual income to T/C and then give the actual one on the renewal.
With HB councils work differently but they all periodically review your books and alter the payments for the next period accordingly.0
