Incorrect electric Economy 7 readings

NEWBIE ALERT!!
Hi dont know if anyone can help but here goes.
Bought a house August 2009, repossession which was on a prepayment meter, with EDF Energy. In October 2009 got a new meter installed for gas and electric, monthly pay with direct debit. Electric was Economy 7, ( though i didnt really take much notice, and know at the time). Anyway not one to keep an eye on my bills so just paid the monthly direct debits every month. In June rang up EDF over my contract coming to an end. The guy stated that it appeared we used alot of electric at night, and did he want me to arrange an engineer to come out and check the meter. I declined this, saying i would look into it later. Anyway we come to know when ive looked into moving suppliers. Rang them up today and theyve stated my readings are the wrong way round, that i have been charged day rate for night and vice versa. That the meter must have been fitted wrong! Theyve estimated it will be about £280 out for the year which i owe them. They are gonna get back to me in a few days, with a figure, stating they would be willing to look at taking 50% off that price. Where do i stand?? I know its not my fault but does that really matter at the end of the day....thanks
andy

  • I had something a bit similar with Atlantic. I'm in an all electric flat which was already on Economy 7 (wrongly as it turns out, but that's another story) when I moved in. About a year ago I changed my supplier to Atlantic and paid by D.D. until I started to really look at my bills closely because they kept sending "amended" ones. It turned out that they were mixing up the day and night rates, though they didn't say the meter had been fitted wrongly. Anyway, I must say that their Customer Service was most impressive (even ringing back at set times when they said they would!) and in the end they quite happily admitted it was their fault and that I would not have to pay back the £300 they reckoned I would have owed them if the meter had been read properly. Result for me and a loyal customer for them! Hope this helps.

our meter shows which rate is in use at any time, which means you cant get it wrong

in the day (08.30 - 01.30 summer 07.30-00.30 winter) it shows "rate 1" is applied and running

    (vice-versa at night)

to read rate 2 (night) you have to press a button

Hi lewiee - Your post says you had new meters for Gas & Elec ?
Please post if you use Gas for Heating & Hot water, because if you do it's highly likely that you should not be on an ECO 7 tariff

Very pretty indeed, if they've agreed to split the difference :T
