Just brought a new toshiba laptop - should i pay for the extended waranty

Hi ive just brought a new laptop, the laptop comes with a standard 12 month waranty.

There is a option to extend this to 3 years for £45.00 Is it worth it??

Thanks

How soon do you have to make up your mind?

I previously had a Dell laptop which developed problems within the first few months - at the end of the first year I took the extended warranty and was glad I did - it needed three new mains lead/chargers which would have been £60 a pop, not to mention the mother board, and hard drive failure in the second year....

I now have a samsung laptop which has never been any trouble and I haven't taken the extended warranty.

It is a gamble really, but in all fairness £22.50 a year isn't a lot for peace of mind.

Okay, this is just my opinion - hopefully a techie will be along soon with more knowledge..

But this doesn't look like an extended warranty to me, it just looks like a data recovery service. In that case (in my view) you'd be better spending the money on a portable hard-drive - something like this..

And getting into the habit of backing up your computer so that if you should have a sudden data loss, you have all your photos, documents etc stored safely somewhere else (you should be doing this anyway).

As I say, just my personal opinion.

If its a standard consumer spec one, I'd say its definitely worth doing. A lot of the sub £800 laptops nowadays are lucky to see out the warranty without issues.

There's an article about laptop reliability here. It's based upon a report by SquareTrade which surveyed over 30,000 laptops. It essentially says that you have about a 20% chance of the laptop failing in three years, rising to 31% if you include accidental damage. There's a graph covering various manufacturers' performance here.

I am so happy I have an asus 27 months old , sadly IMHO whilst the Lappy is all I would wish and (touch wood) reliable, as for the ASUS site it is less than useless. Never mind at the end of the day there are always MSETechies , well done all, who can offer support. I have never yet paid for an extended warranty since I said 29 3/4 years ago "for richer, for poorer, even until you stop sitting on my lap"

Thanks for that - in that case I'd take the warranty.
