smoothies for health reasons.

i have just aquired a blender as a birthday present today,
I know what fruit etc to put in to make smoothies but my basic knowledge is just fruit and milk
but does anyone have any ideas re ratios, or any money saving tips to use it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    I don`t know any moneysaving tips but what you put in it depends on your tastes. :) for veggie smoothies, try beetroot, carrot and spinach, might sound awful but is pretty sweet and healthy. :)
    I like yoghurt (any kind), banana and rasps or brambles.

    Bought lots of rasps this morning and some blueberries.

    To he honest, I never thought of vegetable ones, will give it a go, I really need to eat more veg, (but I hate it) so this is a good idea.
    Do I just put water with vegetables then or does it just blitz them as they are (sorry if it's a daft question):)

    I've only done veg in a juicer not a blender...

    But I mix it with the fruit to disguise the flavour

    But how much liquid you add will depend on how think you want it, and you can add, milk, orange juice, water, pretty much what ever you like.

    You might be able to lower the cost a bit by trying frozen berries and fruit instead of always using fresh.

    Happy birthday!
    If you're not sure what you like, why don't you experiment by making up small amounts of various items separately that you then decant into miniature pitchers (or a normal household's umpteen glasses and cups).

    Then have a tasting session! Pour small amounts into a glass for experimental mixtures, stir, and adjust to taste.

    General breakfast - frozen berries, banana, some oats and a squirt of honey with some basic OJ
    Snack before training - protein powder, oats, pinch of bicarb, squirt of honey, banana and some water

    ooh i have a blender somewhere which i got as a moving in presest (2yrs ago :S) I like the sound of some of these!

    I guess my only MS thought would be to use fruit which is in season, as that'll be cheaper..

    I don't want to put a dampener on all this, but one of the up-and-coming dental health problems of the past 5-10 years has been enamel errosion in kids and adults due to the increase in the consumption of fruit smoothies.

    Smoothies made with ice-cream or sweetened yougurt in them or sweetened with sugar (or honey) can be as bad as a can of Coke dentally speaking.

    Unsweetened smoothies made with just fruit aren't quite as bad - but they are naturally acidic, and so if consumed regularly will dissolve your enamel away. (Regularly would mean more than a couple a day if they were outside of usual mealtimes).

    So make and enjoy them by all means - but as the saying goes, everything in moderation! There can be a downside too.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

    Is there something simple that can be done to mitigate the acidity, like munching on a couple of cubes of cheese after imbibing smoothies?

    Theoretically, that might well help a bit. But how practical would it really be?

    Plus - you'd be turning it into quite a high-calorie snack with all that fruit mushed up plus a couple of lumps of cheese.
