Win XP upgrade disaster!

Hi All,
Just saw the thread for a similar problem i'm facing (see extract below) posted by m.saver in 12th Dec 2004.
Was given a pc with newer OPS on it. I had older pc running with win 98 (2nd) but had bits of hardware I couldn't use. Tried to use XP discs that I got given with newer computer. Had problems installing it had to skip a number of files. But got through installation, well thought I had. Re started computer & first page ok then.................
However, this thread is in the old Chat Forum and won't allow me to post any further messages.
I also tried to upgrade my PC running a Win 98 to Win XP and ended up with messages stating errors in copying a number of files and the installation being aborted.
Eventually decided to write over the old version...suffice to say the problems didn't end there.
Now the PC doesn't even start properly and goes into a perpetual cycle of showing the initial Win XP logo screen that flashes up and than seeming unable to load.
It seems i had done what Scheming_gypsy recommended m.saver not to do - overwrite the old OS as it causes untold problems..
I would like to take up the advice of re-formatting the HD and carry out a new installation. However, the problem is being a techie newbie, i have little idea of how to go about doing just that. Also, i'm not sure the Win XP package has installed sufficiently to even allow me to operate it in 'Safe mode'.
Any tips on how i can get the 'poxy' thing running would be welcome.
Many thanks
Manik

Assuming you have a bootable windows xp cd, go into your bios (usually by hitting del) and select cdrom as first boot device.
Restart computer and the windows xp cd should boot up. This will allow you to select your main hard-drive, format it and install windows.
Any further problems, get back to us with your pc specifications.
Cheers,

do you have a windows 98 se boot floppy disk?
boot from the floppy disk, then type format c: /s
this will completely reformat your hard disk...... have you anything on the hard disk you might still want?
after the hard disk is formatted
cd to your cdrom (with the xp OS cd in)
type setup
should run through and install winxp
a little simplified.... i will try and find more infosmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....
