NAS Devices

I'm currently thinking of getting a NAS device, but before I do so I have a couple of questions.
Firsty, am I right in assuming that they plug directly into a router and all devices connected to the internet via that router will have access to the content?
The primary reason for buying this is to store video's so that I can stream them to my PS3. Can anyone confirm whether the PS3 has any problems accessing a NAS device??

If you change the words "connected to the internet" to "connected to the local LAN", the answer is yes. If you are really referring to accessing the NAS remotely over the internet, then this is an order of magnitude more difficult and less secure.timberflake wrote: »The primary reason for buying this is to store videos so that I can stream them to my PS3. If a PS3 can access a network share which looks like an NTFS folder (with lots of folders and files underneath) then the answer will also be yes. But being PS3-less, someone with one and a NAS will need to confirm this for you.0 -

The PS3 can't read NTFS, only FAT32. Isn't it just a simple case of creating a FAT32 partition on the NAS device?0 -
If you install PS3 media server on your PC, the PS3 will be able to access any drive you direct it to via the media server software. However, I don't know if the NAS would be accessible directly from the PS3.timberflake wrote: »The PS3 can't read NTFS, only FAT32. Well you only need media server on older Operating Systems ad I hve W7. I presume that it would read a nas device no problem.
Keeping my PC on to read the nas kind of defeats the purpose as I want to be able to access the drive whenever I want without having to boot up the PC.0 -
I have a Buffalo Linkstation live NAS on my home network. The XP laptop and Windows 7 laptop can access it without a problem.
The PS3 and O2 joggler can't do it properly and I gave up.
The device is DNLA compliant, the PS3 sort of sees it but then can't load the folder structures in properly for pictures or music.
This one of mine runs on linux inside the NAS and has its own file format, there are gubbins in the box that then make it available in a format that the windows laptops can read and write to properly, it just doesn't work for the other stuff easily.
I paid about £70 18 months or so ago, I think its a 320gb or maybe a 250gb harddrive inside. We needed a new external storage system anyway as we both use laptops and got rid of the desktop machine.
Next time I will do more checks about more compatibility and internet searches.
I'd avoid the linkstation live unless they have ironed out the problems.
There will probably be recommendations on avforums.co.uk and the like.
