List The Benefits You Receive. Can the state afford them?

I've never had any form of benefits either, though dont mind paying tax to help the truly needy.
I have had to use the NHS in the past, firstly after an accident when I had a short hospital stay, then second when I wasnt well for a little while. I suppose I can feel like i've benefitted at least a bit then.0 -
Never had any benefits, except a student grant from 1982-85. Never used NHS. Never will on both accounts. Not intending to draw down state pension - don't want it, don't need it.
I pay enough tax to keep a small northern town in Cheezy Wotsit dinners for a decade. Am i happy about that? No. Do i accept it? Yes. It's the price I pay for living here. My choice at the end of the day.0 -
It doesn't look as if I shall receive much from Mother State this year, but I'd be a prime candidate for Raving Lunatic's Allowance if I posted details here.
Just look at what happened yesterday! :eek:0 -

I don't use them either.
But it's not exactly a choice if you use them in many cases is it.
I might use the NHS one day, I might use them a lot. Though I'd prefer not to.
Ah, I see what you're getting at.
I meant I don't use the NHS, not that I never get ill or never see a doctor.
I have private medical and dental insurance.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Do you have a private GP? Many with private medical insurance still use NHS GP referrals. and A&E. (and I write as a sympathiser). TBH though I'm written off a lot for our health plan, my private health was privately paid for in the main.0 -

I have a private GP.
I have no objection to the NHS. I think it's a valuable service, and should be maintained. I'm just pointing out that it's not something I use.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Sorry, what I was trying to point out (I admit, very badly) was not that you might have a private GP but that probably most private health users go or first port of call to NHS.
I have no desire to personalise anything ATM on this forum!0 -
I fail to see the point of the thread.
Seems to be another "I've got lots of money me, lets boast about it & argue I pay more in tax than I get from the system" style thread.
It is just a way of having a go at a few people.
You & bendix both posted to never having used the NHS. Really? How were you born? Did you get immunised as children? Did you ever go to school? If no, then ok. However if the answer to any of the above are yes, then you will & have used state systems.
I will assume you use the PAYE system to pay your taxes.
bendix is off abroad a lot I gather, so will be using the airports, CAA & other associated systems.
As children I assume you had access to BT, B Gas etc before they were sold off.
A different example. I may not have kids, so why should I fund the education of other peoples kids? Perhpas I can see that there will be a long term value in an educated society. They will be the doctors, nurses, engineers, army etc of tomorrow. Perhaps if I ever get knocked over, one of them will drive the ambulance to get me to hospital. Another will operate & save me. thers too will care for me & rehabilitate me.
Some people are so one dimensional & me me me me me orientated I am suprised, and a little ashamed. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

My point was that despite appearing to be a no benefit person I do use public services and should be grateful for them. I recognise the intent was likely different, which is precisely why I posted that as a ''lucky'' person I still benefit in some ways.

If my ''you'' you mean me, you have misread.
I posted that first! (sticks tongue out at cross LJ) and the education
Agreed. And some people are just cranky today. I wish wageslave were here in her boots to cheer you up.For some reason I always think the tetchiness is worse when YOU get upset.
LIR none of my post was aimed at yourself.
The OP suggests he's never used any state provided facilities. bendix has argued similar (here & in the past). Other posters have made similar claims. My worry is that this is way too narrow a perspective.
We don't look at some of the benefits we all get. In example, the peace of mind when an ill relative is cared for. Or the safety & security we get from extremely dangerous people being imprisoned. These are all things we all benefit from. How would these posters like it if we stopped all tax deductions & closed all the prisons - lets let em all loose!
It is the narrow mindedness and selfishness that gets me LIR.
The initial "you" was aimed at Hamish & the OP. I feel the OP is unnecessary given some of the other shennanigans we've seen on here recently, & actually is designed to be inflammatory. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
