Share dealing?

Ok bit of a newb when it comes to this.

Anyone have any recommendations on a good share dealing service? I was considering Interactive investor, but after reading some reviews I thought I would consult here :D

Chimp.

    I'm a newbie and use Hargreaves Lansdown - I don't think these are the cheapest but I find their online services excellent and informative.
  • First of all, you need to bone up on whether or not you literally mean "Share Dealing".

    1. In 'true' Share dealing, you are literally buying share in companies, and then, (presumably) selling them. This involves fixed (usually) costs per trade, plus stamp duty, plus selling costs.

    2. A CFD account gives you broadly the same thing, but you are buying a 'derivative' of the share. Totally different cost structure. More suited to 'day' or short-term trading. Allows you to trade easily in commodities, and indices as well as currency.

    3. A Spread Betting account. This has strong parallels with a CFD account, but slightly different cost structure and method of dealing. Main difference, profits are tax free (but so are CFD up to a significant CG Allowance).

    Once you have decided, then shop around for best dealing fees/usability for you. Interactive Investor is a valid and reputable option. But others might be better.

    It all depends on what you are looking for from the broker.

    For example, how important is customer service to you? Access to international markets? Good research tools? Ability to trade via an ISA or SIPP?

    All brokers have their positive and negatives.

    Eg I found Share Centre had lovely customer service and really helpful if you're a newbie - will give you advice at no charge, good info on their website, at £7.50 trade commission not the most expensive out there and allow SIPP and ISA accounts;
    TD Waterhouse have a good stock screening and research tools, provide access to international markets, allow SIPPs and ISAs - but at between £8.95 and £12.50 per trade not the cheapest;
    For the best trading tools and charts, direct access to most markets, smart routing so you get the best price, but poor customer service and a difficult to navigate website then Interactive Brokers - very popular with day traders;
    or, if you just want basic tools and cheap trades - Guardian Shares @ £6.94 per trade

    Hope that helps rather than complicate things further for you!

    I use Interactive Investor, for share purchases. I have a dealing and ISA with them, and am happy with the service. I use Hargreaves Lansdowne for funds.

    Not too far back there was an interesting thread on the same subject regarding a broker I have forgotten the name of but they had cheap dealing fees. Maybe you could do a search for it.

    I use the Share Centre for shares and HL for funds. Both these companies give good service to clients. The other day I was doing a little research on shares and liked the way the Share Centre gives broker's views. I am now considering which to buy.
  • x-o is cheapest I know of or halifax for tiny amounts
  • Cheers guys, basically it's a place where I can hold all the shares I obtain from my employer.

    My colleague are going to Interactive investor, so I will wait a bit and see how it pans out.

    I may or may not do some trading in other things.. but need to save some cash for other things! ;)

    iDealing is excellent. I changed from Selftrade or whatever they changed their name to as the service seriously deteriorated.
