London for free

At the start of next month I will be spending a week in London carrying out training for work.

As I will be on my own I don't fancy spending the evenings just sitting by myself in pubs I am after suggestions of things that I can do in the evenings.

Meals are on expenses so that is not a problem.

Most of the free museums seem to close about 18:00 so will not be able to visit them.

Any suggestions welcomed

You can visit some of the museums/galleries because they have late night openings. The following should give you a headstart...

V&A Museum - open until 10pm on Wednesdays
Tate Britain - open until 10pm the first Friday of the month
Tate Modern - open until 10pm on Friday & Saturday evenings
Royal Academy - open until 10pm on Fridays
National Gallery - open until 9pm on Wednesdays

If you stick the name of the museum/gallery you are interested in into Google, it will usually bring up the home page, and it is easy to find opening hours from there.

Also, keep an eye out on the Free cinema tickets sticky thread at the top of this page - I'm sure in the next week or two there will be some free film tickets advertised as available for London during the week you are here, so that could be one night sorted. :p

Will think some more and come back again with any more ideas...! ;)

If you've got any leisure vouchers (ie from Pigsback) you could do it for free

    You could try looking on:

    https://www.londonfreelist.com
    https://www.londontown.com
    https://www.londontourist.org/free

Also, if "cheap" is an option, rather than just "free", log onto https://www.lastminute.com to check out the section on £10 theatre tickets. And the ENO sell "day seats" for their operas at £10 each (I think...?!) if you fancy a night at the opera! :D You have to buy them on the day (they start selling them at about 10am, so not sure if this is an option with you working, although I think you can buy them over the phone as well as in person). I'm not 100% sure but I think the Royal Opera House also do day seats...

  • Try this site for a few ideas:
    http://www.londontourist.org/free.html

    It tells me that...
National Portrait Gallery open 'til 9pm Weds
    Tate Modern open late Fri/Sat
British Museum open 'til 8:30 Thurs/Fri
    V&A 'til 10pm Weds

BUT - check with the websites of these places first, don't rely on the link above (or the info I've just taken from it)! Certainly some of the info there is rather out of date.

Try to find a meal location somethere outside (if not too cold) where you can chill and watch the world go by over your coffee.

The "Time Out" magazine can be handy for looking for London entertainment. Should be enough free stuff in all those pages, and if you're willing to shell out a fiver for a concert somewhere should be great!
  • This isn't free either but about £5 - and soooooo brilliant
