I'm thinking of buying an ipod. Do I have to buy the music from itunes or can I continue to download it from other sources such as Tesco or Tunetribe? Are there advantages to itunes at all?

You can download music from anywhere and drag it into iTunes - you don't have to buy it from iTunes.
You can also use various programs to control your iPod instead of iTunes (e.g. Winamp if you're using a Windows machine) if you wish.0

DRM protected files won't play... eg. songs purchased through the nokia store before they rereleased mp3 versions.0

anystore bought stuff - apart from the Nokia ones will play - you dont have to use itunes it seems to be too big a programme for a simple function and can be a pain in the bottom. But good for th epodcasts
I use this for my music instead of itunes

Ah, indeed. Pretty sure Tesco don't sell DRM protected tunes, do Tunetribe?0

iTunes is pretty handy and gets a lot of bad press, but it does a decent job in my opinion. If you look at your iTunes/iTunes media installation folder you'll see a folder called 'automatically add to itunes'. Just drop non-drm files in here and it does the rest when you load iTunes up.0
